1841 Census lookup - please
« on: Wednesday 18 May 05 15:58 BST (UK) »
Brede

surname Furminger

In particular  Samuel Lewis Joseph b. 1817
should be with wife Charlotte and son Lewis Philip b.1840, if she is still alive. They married in 1839 but she may have died prior to Nov 1842 when he remarried.

My issue is over the father full name, in 1881 he uses just Lewis on marriage certs of his children its Samuel Louis, or just Samuel or lust Lewis/louis.

Might help knowing what is on the 1841

Thanks
Adrian

Hi there Adrian

Have just scrolled through the 100 pages of the 1841 census for Brede, and, although I spotted several Furminger names, I dont think any of those found match your criteria

HO107/ 1106/ Brede, Sussex

Phillips James, 55, Carpenter
..........  Harriett, 26? (not sure about the age, but its 20 something)
Furminger Elizabeth, 9,
...............  Lewis, 10 months

Furminger Louis, 20, Male Servant in the household of Mary Miller, Miller.

Furminger Henry, 25, Ag Lab
...............  Dinah, 20
...............  Male child (unable to read entry)
............... Ellen, 6 months

Furminger Charlotte, 50,

Furminger Thomas, 25, Male Servant in the household of John Ades, Farmer

Furminger Thomas, 50, Thatcher
...............  Mary, 45
...............  James, 20
...............  Ephram, 15
...............  Frederick, 14
...............  Sarah, 12
...............  Isaac, 9
...............  Mary, 9
...............  Carlos, 5
...............  Peter, 3

Everyone above all born in Sussex

You will probably be able to make better sense of them than I can

Adrian

There is possibly another one

Forenames are fairly legible, its the surname that is in doubt, but it looks very much like Furminger as follows

Furminger William, 35, Ag Lab
...............  Harriett, 25
...............  William, 3
...............  Harriett, 1
...............  Eliza, 4 months

All born in Sussex

Chris,

Thanks for doing that, bit of a surprise him not being there....

Couple I have not been able to confirm, so might be a family that has slipped through the net.

Interesting how the 1841 can give variances on age. The Henry 25 and William 35 were actually twins !!!!!

One other question you might know the answer. SFHS apparently have in the Lewes office a transcript of the Brede PR's.  Have you any experience of it ? Before I made the trip down, would like to be sure its a good quality transcript.

By the way its good to have you back.

Hi Adrian

Thanks for those kind words, it is good to be back.

Sorry, but I have no knowledge of the Brede transcription at the SFHG, but if its anything like those at the Record Office just around the corner, then it should be OK.

One avantage of the Record Office though (less than 100 yards from SFHG) is that if you have any doubt about the information, you can look at the original register to verify.

Got to be worth the extra 100 yards walk
