Electoral Registers

Hi,

Ancestry have added London's electoral registers which have been a mine of information for my family.

However - Does anyone know why a person would be listed under a particular address with a different address given as their 'abode'.

Why wouldn't they be listed under their actual 'abode'?

Column 1; Name of Voter in Full, Surname being first.
Colum 2; Place of Abode
Column 3; Nature of Qualification
Column 4; Description of Qualifying Property

The 1884 Reform Act  gave the vote to all male inhabitant householders, to occupiers of lands and tenements worth at least £ 10 and to lodgers paying at least £ l0 a year.Those who occupied a dwelling house by virtue of any office, service or employment were also given the vote.
Entries in the Register that have "dwelling house (service) (successive) all have two addresses in Column 4; Description of Qualifying Property, and it means that he occupied the two addresses in immediate succession to each other. Where several qualifications are possessed by the same person, the particulars respecting each qualification are stated in the list.

Hi Stan,

Thanks for all that info - I checked the Wiki page but it covers an earlier period. I should have said this is a 1925 census. Sorry.

Ive attached a screen shot of the entry (I hope!) - its George Frederick Horwood I'm interested in. He is registered at this same address (his brothers) for at least 3 years with a different 'abode' listed each time.

His qualification to vote is B.P. which stands for Business Premises qualification so this address would be his business address.

Hi,

Ahh - that makes sense. He was in partnership with his brother 'Horwood Bros. Butchers'. So I guess he wasn't eligible at the address he stayed at. I think he was just in lodgings.
