Kooky,

Look at the 1891 Census ( page ref 4212-126-6). Industrial/Ragged school on Jubilee Road. Gosforth, Newcastle. Inmate Charles Ed. Gardiner, aged 13 born Felton.

 Can't see others !

What is page ref for the family in Gateshead on 1901 census ?

I found this couple on the 1881 and 1901 census but thought it strange that a farmer with a large brood of children was now a mason's labourer with only one child.

And in 1901 his wife Henrietta took 16 years off her age given on the 1881 census....

I looked for all the children and didn't find any but they were all of an age to have left home. I thought maybe the family had emigrated for a while.

But it looks as though some tragedy has happened to them between 1881 and 1891. I looked in the local newspapers but didn't find anything there or in the criminal records online.

A mystery!

I see that in the 1881 census Amy's birthplace is given as South Shields.

Her birth is registered there in the 4th quarter of 1877, as Amy Augusta Gardner.

in 1891 there is an Amy A. Gardner aged 13 in a 'Home for Waifs and Strays' at Bedlington. Birthplace is wrong though - Newcastle. RG 12 / 4256 / 10a / 2

Worth bearing in mind perhaps?

On the 1911 census Henrietta says she'd had 14 children, and eight were dead. None were living with her in 1911, only a grandchild.

So there are 8 deaths of their children to find! Quite a few had middle names which would help if we knew them,,,,,,,

Good luck!

Does anyone have anymore information on the family disaster.  What became of the children?

1921 census is getting closure to publication..... can't wait!
