It's amazing all the info I've found for other people on relatives in WW1, but still not found my granddad. my fault for having a granddad called Smith I suppose.  :D

I am Smith by Birth but amzingly I have been able to track back at least to my GG Grand "John Smith" who was born in Scotland....  don't think I will ever go any further on that one....

I can find his marriage in Australia in 1858 so I know he arrived before that but which John Smith with a father John Smith I think will be in the too hard basket.....

Thanks for your help!

I sometimes wonder how easily I get sidetracked as the "Beswicks" are my daughter-inlaws family but I have made great progess for her ....  I somtimes think the "Beswicks" of Glossop are similar to my Smiths though...

War Graves Commission Entry:

http://www.cwgc.org/search-for-war-dead/casualty/725289/BESWICK,%20WILLIAM

Given the date of his death he appears to have lost his life at the Battle of Aisne 1918.

Thanks so much everyone for all your help!

After having been to dawn service this morning for Anzac Day, it felt significant to find yet another of the family died in France

Hi Cheran, William Beswick is my Great Great Uncle, my Grans Uncle who died in 1918. My Gran is now 85, her mother was his sister. His name features along with the fallen of Hadfield, on Hadfield War memorial / cenotaph in Glossop, Derbyshire. Came by your comments earlier today, interesting to read.

I have William Beswick born about 1893 his father Joseph (1868-1932)  and Mother Charlotte Rose (1869-1938)  sister as Annie born abt 1899 and died abt 1971....

I haven't done all the extra research to confirm all the above dates

there is a tree on this link https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Rose-2504  that may be of value.  I will be contacting the profile manager which may be of value for you.

Send me a PM if I can help

Volunteers with Glossop Heritage Trust are currently in the process of verifying the information we have on the local servicemen who fell in World War 1. Once the process is completed we intend to add the details for each of them to our memorial pages which start at http://www.glossopheritage.co.uk/warmem/warmems.htm
As mentioned in a previous post, William Beswick is commemorated on the Hadfield memorial. We have the following notes for him:

Beswick, William, Acting Sergeant, 13981, A Company, 1st Battalion, Cheshire Regiment
Born Dinting, Derbyshire
Enlisted Glossop, Derbyshire
Died of wounds 27th May 1918 aged 25
Son of Joseph and Charlotte Beswick, of 92, Waterside, Hadfield, Manchester.
Commemorated on the Soissons Memorial
In the 1911 Census he was a house painter, son of Joseph, a railway platelayer, and Elizabeth Beswick, a cotton weaver, of 87, Church Street, Hadfield, Derbyshire
