Remember, he had 2 grandmothers, is he confusing her with his mother's mother or was she known as another name - I didn't know my grandmother was Alice until I went to her funeral as she'd always been known as Gertie.

Perhaps you need to start again from what you know is 100% correct and work backwards using certificates. Your boy's dad's birth certificate will give his parents' name and their birth certificates will give their parents etc.

I don't know if you are still searching the Goff family but if you are I can supply some earlier details. Alec's grandfather was William Marrington Goff born in Brightlingsea in 1842. His father was also called
William Marrington Goff. He was born in Great Holland Essex in about 1821, he was a mariner. His wife was Betsey Anne Harvey of Brightlingsea, the daughter of James Harvey a fisherman and Elizabeth Hills of Colchester, a nurse.
William and Betsey had 2 other children, a daughter Grace who died aged 2 and a son Richard Harvey Goff. Richard moved to Scotland and then to Lancashire and became an oyster merchant. He also changed the spelling of his name to Gough which is how the names of all his 8 children are spelled.
