Rev John Glasgow, Kilbirny
« on: Wednesday 25 April 12 17:40 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anybody has any details of where this John Glasgow was buried and where born, please? I have details of his marriages and c.14 children...but nothing about his parentage which also would be very useful. Any help much appreciated.

Without some info as to a birthyear - it would be difficult to find the right person

When and where did he marry?

Who did he marry?

Was he still still alive between 1851-1911 as any of the census entries should show his birthplace.  If he was born in Ireland - it may only show the country - not the county

You will find the Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae on-line. It gives biographies of Church of Scotland ministers arranged by Synod and Presbytery.

He is thought to have been born c.1653 and died 1721 at the age of 68 and although I have perused Fastii, Robertson & Paterson,  I can't find any info on where he was born or his parentage or his siblings, if any. His marriage, to Jean Cuninghame, is recorded in both Dalry & Kilbirnie OPR. He also married a Margaret Scot. 6 children to Jean and 8 to Margaret....Many thanks for your interest.

Unable to help regarding parentage, but some info on Google books.  Have forgotten how to shorten the URL

http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=4KUHAAAAQAAJ&pg=PA354&dq=Rev+John+Glasgow,+Kilbirnie&hl=en&sa=X&ei=OQyZT-6GOeWa0QWC1JDbBQ&ved=0CDAQ6AEwADgK#v=onepage&q=Rev%20John%20Glasgow%2C%20Kilbirnie&f=false

  ???

There are also several wills and  inventories for descendants of the Reverend Glasgow.  All appear to be associated with the estate of Mountgreenan.  Available for download from the ppv site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.  (there are 3 pages of Glasgow wills there).

As he would have been a graduate of a Scottish University (probably Glasgow) it would be worth looking at University records of graduates.

It is also likely that he owned some land at some point. The Register of Sasines may show something.

It is also worth looking at the on-line catalogue of the National Archives of Scotland. He may appear in a document there, perhaps even as a witness with his father in an earlier paper.

He may appear in the Register of Deeds.

Many thanks piglet & GR2. I know a fair amount about the family descending from Rev JG but as I mentioned, nothing prior to his "arrival" in Kilbirnie and his subsequent marriages. Perhaps Mitchell library will have more info - he must have been doing things prior to taking up his post in Kilbirnie....and post/pre graduation...I'll just have to keep digging.

There is or at least was a street in Kilbirnie called Glasgow Street, its probably named after him as its one of our oldest streets in the town.

He is featured in Volume III page 103 of the Fastii - but it doesn't give you much more than you appear to have already provided (except the University)
