Look up help for Hawick, please?
« on: Saturday 28 April 12 19:36 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone has any access to any records of Hawick in Roxburghshire?  I am trying to find out when a James Black died (why couldn't it have been an unusual name instead!).  He was born 11/5/1862 and married an Agnes Johnston in Hawick on 10/9/1892.

The last known address we have found was in 1871 when he lived at 1 weensland Cottage, Hawick.  He resided there with an Andrew & Ann Goit, plus others.

I believe he may have been the son of a Robert and Jessie Black (her maiden name Williamson).  Although there has been some question mark over his father.

Can anyone help, please?

Hi Olives

Have you confirmed James' parents' names from this 1892 marriage to Agnes?

Not sure you have the right entry for 1871:

Andrew Goit 50
Ann Goit 31, wife
Ann Goit 15
Janet Goit 13
Andrew Goit 9
James Black 10 stepson b. Hawick
Jane Black 7 stepdaughter b. Hawick
William Tait 1

Address: No 1 Weensland Cottage, Hawick

I think the James and Jane above are children to an Ann Black who married Andrew TAIT (not Goit which looks like a mistranscription) above. I can't see easily a birth entry for James aged 10 on the census on IGI but there is an entry for a Jane Black, daughter of Ann Black born 27 October 1863 in Hawick which fits well with the above entry.

For the Robert Black and Jessie Williamson, these are the children's showing for them on IGI:

1. Grace b. 5 Aug. 1857
2. David WILLIAMSON b. 10 Jan. 1860
3. Jamesb. 11 May 1862
4. RobertT b. 10 June 1864

There is this entry for this family for 1861:

Robert Black 52, millwright b. Roxburgh, Roxburghshire
Jessie Black 32, wife b. Selkirk, Selkirkshire
Robert Black 17
John Black 13
William Black 11
Margaret Black 8
Elspeth Black 5
Grace Black 3
David Black 1
William Williamson 19

Address: Village Of Weensland 1st House

Struggling with an entry for 1871 so far.

Really need confirmation that you have James' parents' details from his marriage cert to make sure we are on the right line....

Thanks for your help, Monica.

The information is being sought by my elderly father who is adamant that he holds the right information.  I think he just needs the date of death of James Black and Jessie (nee Williamson).

If you are able to find anything else out then I would be really grateful.

Many thanks
 :)
