Help with some elusive Jones ancestors please
« on: Saturday 28 April 12 19:54 BST (UK) »
Hi

Any thoughts or help with the following people would be much appreciated. William Jones, on the 1881 census below is my great grandfather, William Edward Jones. I have him on all the censuses from here to 1911, plus his marriage certificate.  I'm struggling to get further back than him though. Do you think the 1871 family below is the same as the 1881 one? It looks very like them, even though the infant Mary seems to have become Jane! There are also minor differences in birthplaces, but I think these are explainable.

If you DO think it's the same lot, any help in tracing Edward or Jane further back would be invaluable. So far I've drawn a complete blank and these are people I really want to trace.

Thanks in advance for looking.

Hi Suz

Mary Jane is my guess, and they settled in to calling her Jane by the time she was 10. No, I haven't located a birth cert yet.

I see 4 Mary Jane Joneses born in Shropshire in 1871, but none of them in the Wem district. I guess it's one of them, but 4:1 isn't good odds!

I've done a lot of slogging away on this, and think I have been able to traces Edward and Jane Jones both backwards and forwards. I don't want to think how many Jones families I looked at in the process. If anyone could cast their eyes over this and point out any flaws or corroboration, I'd be extremely grateful. I guess the weakest link is between the 1861 and 1871 Edward Joneses, but I can't see a better candiadate in 1861. I think that Baschurch and Ruyton XI towns are very close together - is this correct?

Thanks for looking.

Genuki is a good source for most things including distances between parishes

http://www.genuki.org.uk/cgi-bin/nearby?CCC=SAL,GRIDREF=SJ394221,DISTANCE=5,PN=Ruyton of the Eleven Towns

It gives Burlton as in the parish of Loppington

Do you have the marriage cert to Jane to confirm father's name?

Thanks Suzard and Osprey. I don't know how I missed that 1891 entry but cheers for finding it.

Osprey - no I haven't ordered a birth certificate yet, there are several potenttial candidates and I'd like to try and narrow the odds down a bit first.

Regards

Mike

I now know that Richard and Jane Jones are, unfortunately, not my family. Their son Edward, who I believed to be my 3xgreat grandfather turns up on later censuses

RG number: RG11
Piece: 2628
Folio: 47
Page: 21

Edward Jones, Farm Labourer  37  born 1844   Baschurch, Shropshire
Hannah Jones, Wife 40  born 1841   Ellesmere, Shropshire
Richard Jones, Son Single  Farm Labourer  16  born 1865 Ellesmere, Shropshire
(Richard, of course, is the same name as Baschurch Edward's father)

I'm posting this and calling this enquiry closed, just to avoid confusion in later searches.
