John NODEN Transported for Life in 1829
« on: Sunday 29 April 12 19:00 BST (UK) »
COMPLETED

I have recently found the above record showing that John Noden was sentenced to Death in the summer of 1829 and this was commuted to Transportation for life. I was wondering if anyone has access to any further info on this person. His age in 1829 would be a big help. Thanks

There doesn't seem to be any record of ANY Noden being transported. At least the records don't show one?

Could he have died prior to being transported?

Umm could be a mistranscription.
Janes/James Boden was transported for life aboard the Layton arrived 17th june 1829 in NSW.

Two James Boden deaths recorded in NSW in this time frame.
At parramatta aged 74 in 1889. no further detail
At West Maitland aged 71 years in 1860 mother Susan.

John NODEN who was convicted of the rape of Elizabeth CURETON in 1829 had his death sentence commuted to transportation & he was sent to a penal hulk in BERMUDA for 20 years.

There is a large file on John NODEN held at the TNA: HO 47/75.

Mmm Got his just rewards, thanks Merlin.
I hadn't thought of transportation to other areas, is that the only other place outside of Australia?

Actually, he returned to his home town after serving his time married & died about 20 years later  :o

Other places of transportation from memory are:

North America, Bermuda, West Indies, Gibraltar, Andaman Islands.

thanks to all who have assisted.

Merlin. I have looked at the National archive record but unfortunately John Noden's age is not on there. Please may I enquire how you have learned that he returned to Shropshire within 20 years and married? I can see a record in the 1851 census where a John & Sarah Noden are living in the area. John's dob would be around 1809 if this is the one you have identified?

John NODEN was 27yo when he was convicted in 1829. So that puts his birth c1802.

thanks Merlin and everyone else who has contributed. I think I now have enough info to establish that this individual was not in my family tree
