Welcome to Rootschat!

The original poster hasn't been online for a few months but may come back after notification from this post.

The GRO website gives Maria's maiden name as Allen on the 1850 birth of Robert and the 1853 birth of Sarah Ann, but the marriage still isn't leaping out for the moment.

Thankyou for that information.
It helps me onto a further stage but I must admit I'm not a natural at anything to do with computers so I find sourcing information very hard work!

Kind Regards

L.R.

I must add, this all started with trying to find the parentage of my grandfather Vernon Victor Burston.
Neither parent is named but I suspect it is Louisa who, the story goes was working in service, presumably on the country estate where the John Burston from Breconshire was working.
I think this may have been the Consall Estate in Staffordshire because his address was Consall Forge.
This is an area, not an actual forge so I can't establish exactly which house he lived in.
Anyway, it seems his mother became pregnant by the owner of the estate and a Robert Garside was paid off to marry her!
I suppose I will never find records of any of this because it would all have to be hushed up!
Are these Burstons your ancestors? which line are you following?

Kind Regards

L.R.

no relation to me, just helping with the search.

Working from the places of birth as given on the 1851 census in Llangattock, I think Maria Allen was born in Wiveliscombe in Somerset.

1841 census Maundown (?), Wiveliscombe HO107/950/9 folio 47 pg 29
Ann Allen 40
Maria 15
Joanna 25
Sarah 7
all born in county

baptisms 1 Dec 1833 in Wiveliscombe daughters of Ann Allen, single woman
Maria, base born about 8 years old
Sarah, base born about 5 years old
and Robert base born bp 24 Feb 1828 son of Ann Allen single woman

When was Vernon Victor born?

I wonder if John Burston and Maria never were married.
With moving up to Staffordshire it could have been presumed that they were.
I think this was the case very often for various reasons, one being that they couldn't afford.

I'm not sure there was a large cost to getting married at that time. People married wearing their Sunday best.

1881 census Consall Forge
John Burston head mar 60 iron miner b. South Wales, Brekenshire
Maria wife 56 b. Brekenshire
Rowland J son 20 b. Staffs, Kingsley
Frederick G son 17 iron labourer b. Cheddlton
Winnifred A dau 12 b. Ipstones
Vernon Victor grandson 6 b. Kingsley
Walter M T F grandson 4 b. Kingsley

birth reg for Walter as Walter Noble Fitzwarren march qtr 1877 has no mother's maiden name. Baptism 21 Jan 1877 in Kingsley shows his mother as Sarah Ann.

Vernon Victor bp 31 Jan 1875 son of Louisa, abode Hazlescross.
Louisa married 25 November 1880 so a gap between Vernon's birth & her marriage

Hi
I've not been able to find a marriage for John Burston born 1821/1825 to Maria.
Neither have I found the marriage of Rowland John his son to, I think Elizabeth Hampson.
I have found the grave of Rowland and Elizabeth at Kingsley Churchyard in Staffordshire and Elizabeth is described as his wife.
As this couple seemed to do a lot of travelling about, presumably following his occupation as a Gamekeeper I may be looking in the wrong place.
I have an idea that Elizabeth was from Lancashire, Liverpool I suspect, but as I said earlier, I am not a natural at this job and am probably not requesting the right information!

Regards

Laraine
