Clark Photographers Blyth
« on: Tuesday 01 May 12 18:44 BST (UK) »
Hi
Does anyone have any info about this studio? My father-in-law died recently and we found some photos. The older one has the name and address at the bottom of the photo, the later one is a postcard type with a feint mark on the reverse saying Clark. I wondered if anyone had any dates which may help us identify the people. A few years ago we asked father-in law if he had any photos but he said not many and didn't show us these so an opportunity lost to identify the people. :(
thanks

We obviously had the same idea Steve.  At Woodhorn today i checked as many appropriate Kelly's directories as they had.  This is what I found

I couldn’t spot them in 1887 but by 1897 there is a James Luke Clark, Photographer operating from 1 Central Hall Buildings, Waterloo.

He is still there in 1902 but by 1910 the entry reads ‘James Luke Clark (Mrs.), Photographer.  Same address.

The next available Kelly’s is 1921 but by then James Luke (Mr. or Mrs.) has gone but there is a Henry Clark, Photographer, working from 11 Market Place.  By 1925 he has moved to 1 Croft Road.  The latest directory I could find  was for 1938 and Henry Clark is still in business at that address.

So you have a wide window, depending upon which Clark your photographs relate to.

Many thanks
The 1st photo has Central Hall buildings so must be between 1897 and 1921.
A closer look at the feint mark on the 2nd says H.Clark so between 1921 and 1938 .
Thanks for your help

I wouldn't be too rigid on the years.

Sometime between 1894 and 1897 James Luke set up in business.
Sometime between 1902 and 1910 he died and his wife took over.
Sometime between 1910 and 1921 Henry began trading.

It's possible that Henry was a son (or maybe nephew) and it's really the same business but there's nothing to prove that in what we have so far.
