Henry Hulse Burton
« on: Tuesday 08 May 12 09:45 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to find what happened to a Henry Hulse Burton & his wife, after the 1881 Census. They had a daughter Clarice Ann who I have traced but I can't find anything about her parents. Henry was born in Zante, Ionian Isles, Greece in 1851. (Not sure why as his siblings were born either in Ireland where I guess their parents were married, or Derbyshire where they lived.) Henry was a Policeman who married Annie Greenfield in Leeds in 1876. Their daughter was born in Leeds in 1880. After that, no records relating to Henry or Annie. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for that. At least I know he didn't die early.

Was his father in the military at any point? That would explain why he was born in Greece.

There is a newspaper article, 23 December 1882, in which Henry Hulme Barton, of Arundel Street, Wakefield, a Detective Inspector of the Wakefield Borough Police Force, gave evidence in a murder trial. He had been the one to apprehend the accused, Dr Samuel James Noakes.
"Detective Inspector Burton" is also mentioned in articles in April and November 1883.

 - there is here a Henry Hulse Burton listed as part of the Imperial Light Horse, a colonial unit in the Boer War.

I would suggest you check with the West Yorkshire Archive Service: http://www.archives.wyjs.org.uk/archives-wakefield.asp
They may hold records relating to his service in the police, or be able to tell you where such records as held.

I will do that. Thank you very much. His father was a Police Superintendant & a Chelsea Pensioner.

This response for Jorose.
