1841 census - double entry???
« on: Wednesday 09 May 12 11:32 BST (UK) »
Has anyone any experience / knowledge of a person appearing in 2 different villages in the 1841 census.  I am assuming that the enumeration was not done on one night and that being the first comprehensive census the instructions may not have been clear / understood.

I ask because I have a Harriet Denman aged 50 born Sussex, shown as being at West Hoathly and another one with same details shown as being at Worth, East Grinstead.
Richard Wernham (Berkshire 18th century),
William Hissey (1805 to 1813, Hampstead Norris),
Kapirin (Siberia 19th Century),
Kitching 1850,
Mary Howse born 1806 ish,
Chris Truelove marr. John Pocock 2-7-1696, Kintbury, Berks

Unless the neighbours are the same, then i'd say two different women.

I have seen replications in the 1841, whether two enumerators covered the same tracks or it was an error in compliation, who knows?

Hi

I can see Harriot Denman in Soper's Ride, West Hoathly in 1841 (HO107 Piece 1111 Book/Folio 8/21 Page 13), but I can't see the other one  :-\

The one I found is with what appears to be husband Thomas 62, Ag Lab, children Mary 20, Ann 15, Harriot 15, and Sarah 13.

Are the rest of the family with her in the other one?  Do you have the ref?

Weird - that is the same family as I found on Genes Reunited at Worth, East Grinstead, even down to the unorthodox age of 62 (rather than a multiple of 5) for Thomas.  I guess it is the same information but recorded at 2 places by transcription or enumerator's error I suppose.  Still at least I do not have to worry about 2 Harriots.

The image I found shows Hoathly, not Worth; I've looked at two sites for Harriot, and both only give one Harriot Denman aged 50 +/- 5 years in Sussex in 1841.  What does the GR image show?

I can see a Richard Denman and family in Copthorne in Worth, but no Harriot.

Thanks Gaie, I do not have access to GR images, I'm content that your locating them in Hoathly is correct.  Although there are so many Denmans around East Grinstead at the time, I would be incredibly unlucky to have 2 exactly matching households.
