mystery MILNE at Slatybaulk, parish of DUNNOTTAR 1841
« on: Saturday 12 May 12 14:46 BST (UK) »
Anyone  know Margaret Milne’s maiden name please?
Or who her husband was? Looks like she’s a widow here…

I’ve searched for birth / baptism records of all 9 others listed in this 1841 census to discover
parents’ names, none found so far. Would be so grateful if anyone can identify.

Slatybaulk was enumerated just before Swinewaird, so was possibly part of that croft.

You might have more success looking for deaths of the older children, in the hope that one or more survived after 1855, Hence giving you fathers name.

Also, failing that, using wildcards for the surname might help to cover similar sounding names such as Millen, Mullen etc.

Remember too, that ages over 15 in the 1841 census were often rounded to the nearest 5 so dob often not entirely accurate.

Just an afterthought, have you found any of the family in later census records?  Might give slightly more accurate info on ages and places of birth and whether they survived.

Having a look at census records just now - no luck so far.

Got bored not finding my own searches this afternoon so will give yours a try for a change of 'scenery'.  :D

Nothing I can think of is helping.  Frustrating that none of them seem to appear on other census records.
Do you have marriage or death of any of them? How do they relate to your line?

Must go make some food.  Been on here longer than intended (not continuously looking for this family!).

Have you been directly in touch with any of the members on the SIT........ http://surname.rootschat.com/sit-surnames.php?letter=M&this_name=MILNE&lang=EN

Particularly perhaps, janglaschu ( http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40431 ) who was online as recently as today and appears to have Milnes in Dunottar.  She last commented on Milnes in that area in 2008 so may have made progress since then.

Good luck.

Given that no relationships are stated on the 1841 census, it's possible that this is more than one generation of a family especially as Margaret is enumerated as 55, so really 55-60 and Maria is 6 months.

There are entries for some of the family members in IGI extracted batch C112555 for Dunnottar
Alexander born 26/5/1814 son of Robert Milne & Margaret Grieve
Mary born 17/9/1822 baptised 4/10/1822 same parents
Robert born 31/7/1825 bp 18/8/1825 same parents

also these who aren't with the family in 1841
George born 21/3/1828, bp 18/4/1828
David born 24/5/1821, bp 9/6/1821

Robert Milne married Margaret Grieve 27/11/1809 Kinneff & Catterline batch M112624

possible baptism for Amelia in Dunnottar batch C112555
Amelia bp 18/4/1837 dau of Robert Carnegie & Jane Milne
