Sir Frederick Smith 1925
« on: Saturday 12 May 12 22:24 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I was wondering if anyone can help me my Grandfather Sir Frederick Smith was born in Steyning on 17/02/1925

His parents were Leonard Smith and Kathleen Finch they had at least 8 children but I cannot find any information about Leonard and Kathleen.

Their children I believe were Peggy, Kaye, Leonard, Phylis, Alice, Douglas, Sir Frederick and Sir Raymond Smith.

Frederick's birth certificate states 36 Noren? Road, Preston, Brighton

All the other children born from 1910 - 1929 were in the Brighton area.

If anyone can help I would really appreciate it.

I too am having trouble matching a Leonard Smith to a Kathleen Finch.
The only marriage I can find of a Kathleen Finch is to an Owen Smith  in Stourbridge Worcestershire June 1/4 1924 vol 6c page 125.

I also noted that there was not a knighthood awarded to Frederick Smith, he was actually registered as Sir Frederick Smith at birth.

I'll search some more

I once found a record of them but it was in my early days of searching so I didn't record it and for the life of me I cannot find it now!!

Nope there was no knighthood, my great grandfather was clearly a bit nutty after having 8 children and decided to call the last two Sir - he thought it would help them!

Do you mind me asking how you are related to them?

Hi
I am not related to this family at all, I just saw your post and thought  would see if I could find anything on them. So far no luck.

Your ggrandfather wasn;t the only one to give his children the name Sir, I have seen quite a few whilst searching,

Ahhh sorry I thought you were searching for them yourself.

Thank you very much for trying, it's a shame its such a common name but there must be lots of us out there, I just can't find any of them!

Having no luck whatsoever.  Where did you get the names of Sir Frederick's brothers and sisters?  I can't  even find suitable birth registrations for those you say were born after 1911 when the mother's maiden name is shown.
The only two children shown 1910  - 1930 surname Smith mother's maiden name Finch are Sir Frederick in 1925 and Sir Raymond in 1929

I believe the mother's maiden name only started to be recorded on certificates in the 1920's so I also found they only showed up for Raymond and Frederick.

My mother and her brothers and sisters remember some of the names of their aunties and uncles and we know they were born and grew up in Brighton and surrounding areas. I matched the names they could remember to birth entries between 1910 - 1929 but the only two I can be certain of in Frederick and Raymond due to the introduction of mother's surnames being entered.

I know their mother Kathleen died when Frederick was approx 14 in 1939

Leonard owned a hotel in brighton and they were antique dealers.

I do know they moved around a lot. I can't find my grandfather Frederick on any of the census's in or around Brighton.
