Thomas LANE - Help to find arrival
« on: Monday 14 May 12 11:43 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,  Could someone please help me with an arrival.  I just cant find it. One of 2 families that have put me at my wits end.  This is the first one.....

I have a Thomas Lane who was born 1835 from Surrey UK,  His father was a retired Lieutenant in the Navy reserve in the UK.

Thomas Lane married Sarah Thomas in the Hinton area of NSW in 1855 and their first child was born in 1856.  Thomas has his occupation as a Carpenter.  I have information back in the UK but I have been frustrated by not being able to find his arrival to Australia..  His father did not come with him.  As Thomas was only 20 when married - it is only a small window for his arrival.  Is it possible that with his father having contacts with the navy that Thomas was a working crew member.  I hope someone can help me.  Adcord

hello
Closest I could find in NSW unassisted arrivals was a Mr Thomas Lane (no age given ) arriving in Sydney from Portsmouth in August 1853

http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/indexes-online/indexes-online

there are other men of this name but too old or too late in arrival date.

also many plain Mr Lane but most were from Melbourne.

regards

Robyn

Yes, there MAY be additional information on that NSW SRO record....

Have you spotted the absolutely fantastic series of links on the NSW Resources Board for the Christ Church Cathedral's records for marriages, burials, baptisms in that Diocese?   You could even find possible family history sheets....
Sometimes these images even include the ship of arrival  ;D, parents names etc

Enjoy as I notice that the NSW BDM online index shows the 1855 marriage was 'CH' and although their key show 'Hoxham'  it will turn out to be 'Hexham' and the linked images !

Cheers,  JM

No. 198

Both signed,

In the presence of  (I cannot read these names, sorry, but both witnesses were of Newcastle.)

Now you need to find a family register and any details there....  Also baptisms for any children.

If you need help deciphering the witnesses names, there’s always help from RChat’s Decipher Board.
