Seaman's ticket 1856
« on: Tuesday 15 May 12 16:38 BST (UK) »
Does anyone please have any idea what the last line of this 1856 record says? It looks to me like Deres or Dres but as the Mariner in question had previously deserted a ship in 1851 I wondered if it could be an abbreviation that meant he deserted this one as well!

I'm advised that NB probably refers to New Brunswick, could it be a reference to his previous desertion in Quebec? The numbers after NB seem to be 14.21 which would refer to the UK ports of Boston and Cardigan so it doesn't really make any sense. Must say though, it's been a long struggle to make sense of any of it!  ;)

I noticed that the word before was Liverpool and that the last letter of the word in question was crossed by a flaw line which comes all the way down the image makingone letter look like two. So I read it as L'pool - Peru.

It's not a flaw line andygmandrew. it's the grid line of the Seaman's Ticket form. Doesn't matter though, I see what you mean about it separating the word. Unfortunately, if it is Peru it makes even less sense! The forms don't normally state the departure and destination points, they are usually in code.

Liverpool could of course be the port of registry of the ship.  ???

The entries on the form don't seem to follow the usual rules which is why I've been trying to decipher the words and numbers separately. Can't read the long number in the last part of the entry either!

I'm replying to my own query here in the hope of getting some replies that make sense of this entry. Six years later I'm back on the trail!

I think this relates to my 3x gt grandfather, even though the age is wrong  I managed to find quite a number of his crew lists at the National Archives after posting the original query but this is the one I would really like to find as it seems he died a couple of years later.

I find this entry particularly puzzling because the entries for home trade usually have entries in the Out and Home columns but this one only shows in the Home column. Also, the date the crew lists are filed is usually shown underneath but that doesn't seem to be the case on this one.

The only other entry shown against his name on the document is in the Out column for 1853 which states Glasgow. I thought this was perhaps an indication of where the ship sailed from but having looked at entries for other seamen on the page, that column seems to show the ship's name (others are for example Christina and Revenge).

Hoping for some Seamen's ticket help rather than deciphering handwriting.  :)

Here it is, have had to resize it so hope you can read it okay. I actually ordered the original of this form when I was at the National Archives some years ago, in an attempt to decipher it. FindMyPast has since put it online and their copy is pretty good.  :)
