Charlton Terrace, Grimsby.
« on: Tuesday 15 May 12 20:15 BST (UK) »
My Grandfather was born there and, purely out of idle curiosity, just wondered where it might have been.

Google Earth produces Charlton Street which contains various businesses along the length.

Would I be right in assuming that this is the correct area and may have been a row of houses therein?

Regards... Andrew.

There seem to have been a large number of houses in Charlton Terrace in 1881 - but no Charlton St.  Looking for Albert LUSBY aged 26 will find the place if it helps.

1891, 1901 and 1911 are just the opposite, so I suspect they may be the same street.

Perhaps you can find people in the Terrace in 1881 who have the same neighbours in the Street in 1891.

Thank you.  I expect they are one and the same.

As Charlton Street is all business premises, my guess is that there was bomb damage in WW2 due to being near the docks.

You are right Andrew, there was bomb damage in that area, but I am not sure if Charlton Street was hit....my aunt lived in that street and I don't remember seeing bombed houses down there, but I could be wrong, the old memory aint what it used to be!!
I believed Annesley Street quite near to Charlton Street was bombed.

The 1964 1:2500 map shows the street and its housing to be intact at that time http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=526353,410130

I'm not sure but I think Charlton Terrace was further south than Charlton Street,  I will be in town over the weekend so will pop to the Grimsby Library and have a look.
If you look at the map Geoff posted, where the streets named Waterside Drive, Yarborough Drive etc are tthis was where the old Grimsby General Hospital stood and there were  a couple of long rows of houses I think Charlton Terrace was around here.  Not saying that this is 100% correct but will certainly have a look at the old maps at the library  :)

My wife was born in Charlton St as was her mother and grandmother and this area was high density back to back terrace houses, she doesn't think Charton St was bombed but Ayscough St was, which, in those days ran parallel and to the East of Charlton St.
She has no recollection of Charlton Terrace.

Further information, while a death cert. states Charlton Terrace correspondence indicates Chantry Lane, Charlton Terrace.

I see Chantry Lane is not too far from Charlton Street and presume Charlton Terrace is a row of housing therein.  Would this make sense?
