Baptism of Patrick COUGHLIN 1805
« on: Saturday 19 May 12 11:42 BST (UK) »
When Patrick joined the army he said he was born in Clonmore and his father's name was Michael.   Working backwards from his age at enlistment he was born in April 1805.

From The Ireland Tithe Applotment Books on Ancestry I can see a Michael COUGHLAN living at Craan, Oldleighlin, Carlow in 1824 and it seems this is only about a mile from Clonmore.   As the surname doesn't seem to be a common one in this area I am hoping he might be Patrick's father.

Please would anyone be able to check the baptisms for this parish to see if Patrick is there?

Many, many thanks,

Diana

1805 is possibly a little too early for a baptism - many registers dont go back before about 1830, especially in rural areas. Also worth bearing in mind that many people were not listed on the Tithes - e.g. people in towns etc...

What denomination were your Coughlin family ?

I'm not so sure that the two locations you mentioned are all that close - military records usually give place of birth as the name of the civil parish. Clonmore is in the east of Co. Carlow bordering county Wicklow. Oldleighlin civil parish is in the west bordering Co. Kilkenny.

Hi Shane

Thank you very much for your reply and the link to the additional info.

Patrick was RC but as it's a rural area maybe the records weren't kept as early as 1805.

Hi Shane

Thank you for the second post.   Actually he said he was born in Clonmore, Co Wicklow.   Do you think I'm looking in the wrong place entirely?

part of the Co. Carlow civil parish of  Clonmore borders Co. Wicklow... but doesn't seem to extend into that County. There's a civil parish named Clonmore in Co. Wexford, but none that I see in Wicklow. About 25 towns and townlands named Clonmore in Ireland - but again cant see any in Wicklow.

I'll check further on that Clonmore civil parish in Carlow..

Patrick could have given the name of his RC parish - also Clonmore. This covers a number of civil parishes in counties Carlow and Wicklow.

Clonmore and Crecrin in Co. Carlow

and Aghowle, Ardoyne, Crecrin, Liscolman and Mullinacuff in Co. Wicklow

RC baptism records for the parish go back to 1819, marriages to 1813. These are available in the National Library in Dublin on microfilm Pos. 4198. RootsIreland (pay-website) also appears to have transcriptions for this parish.

Hi Shane

Thank you so much for all that information.   It really is kind of you to have gone to all that trouble.

It does seem that there are no records as early as I need so that rather settles things.   I have been very lucky with all the army records and consequently I know more about Patrick than anyone else in the tree.   I'll just have to be content with that.
