You'll probably need to give a bit more detail before we can help- where did you find this phrase "Out of North Barr"?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

The phrase is a residency(or birth?) reference in baptismal records late 18th century Leeds area. There appears to be a North Barr Beverley, but this doesn't seem appropriate. Was there a North Barr district in or near Leeds at this time?

Regards
Roger

I too have come upon this phrase in reference to one of my direct ancestors. Their residency is given as 'Out of North Barr' for two of their children in the late 18th century. Both were baptised at St. Peter's Parish Church in Leeds.

I do know that another of their children moved to Scotland in the early - mid 1800s and I wonder whether this might be a reference to North Barr in Renfrewshire. Mills were opening in Scotland all around this time. Perhaps they went up there for work, something which, in my case, might have led to their son, moving to Scotland to work as a weaver....

There are a number of references to North Bar in the Leeds Intelligencer. One advert refers to Harrison Street, near the Free Grammar School, North Bar. Leeds. Leeds Intelligencer - Thursday 19 July 1827
North Bar Engineering Co. was in Vicar Lane, in 1928. Harrison Street is off Vicar Lane

That certainly seems more plausible that North Barr in Renfrewshire. Interesting. I will look into it.

My 3rd Great-Grandfather that headed up to Scotland from Leeds around 1815-1820 was a cloth dresser and I suspect his choice to move to Scotland was tied up with the Luddite movement in the West Ridings a little earlier.

Many thanks!

THE BARS,  NORTH BAR, THE OLDEST BAR-STONE we have in Leeds, is one of the few stones indicating the boundaries of the old town of Leeds. These are not to be confused with toll-bars. They marked the limits of the town proper, Links with Bygone Leeds - Page 90

Stan,

That is incredibly helpful of you and would seem to be the most likely candidate for a location. I wonder whether the peculiar description of 'Out of North Barr' as a residence might refer to someone living to the North of the North Barr. Otherwise why not just say 'North Barr'.

I am not certain of the parish boundaries for St. Peter's but suppose it must extend beyond the North Barr. I will need to have a look and see.

Anyway you have been a great help.
