MacDiarmids to Georgia - help please

As a biologist I expect you're not squeamish Erato.  I wouldn't have expected a picture like this at the time though. 

When I look at young John in this photo I undersand why his much older brother Angus made such a big thing about being "6'1" in his younger days" on his passport application in 1921. Little brother John was tall too.

How did he come to die suddenly on a train?  Was it a heart attack?

Train crashed as I understand it by way of the US Medical Association journal. I've not been able to confirm that crash on line, but have asked the library in DeLand to confirm that.

This would have been soooooo much easier if I'd only been able to find the ship's manifest. This is a paragraph from a 1997 letter that my mum's cousin provided to me earlier today. (I've never met him in person.)

My grandfather's siblings and Mother came to Atlanta, Georgia but his Mother, both of her daughters and two of her sons returned to Scotland. However, three brothers remained in Georgia, one of whom, John, became a physician.

Now, I need to look for Mother Effie arriving back in Scotland after 1900 (when she last appeared in Georgia census) - she would have been quite elderly to travel by herself. I know that the daughters, Mary & Ann, must have gone back much earlier than that as I've found their respective marriages.

Count your blessings!  These people traveled back and forth at a relatively late date; they may be findable.  With just one exception [a group that traveled to NY in 1834], I can't find any of mine and probably never will.  Two groups went to the US by way of Canada in the early 1840s  - no luck.  And a bunch went to New England in the 1600s - forget it.

I'm checking back in to let you know that the DeLand library sent an e-mail yesterday saying they have found info for me regarding John who was mayor of that municipality at some point before his death. They are popping it in the mail for me. How great is that? AND a one-week response is fantastic!

I haven't heard back from the Atlanta Oakland Cemetery to determine if any of the MacDiarmids buried there might be along side John and/or siblings of his. Does anyone have another suggestion as to where I might source info on this cemetery?

I'm still looking for a death date for brother Angus.

I'm not sure I believe that mother Effie (Euphemia) would actually have sailed back to Scotland in her mid-70s (after the 1900 census). I can't find her arrival back in Glasgow. The Benbecula historical society (Outer Hebrides) is going to take a look at their records to see if they can detect if she ended up with one of her daughters there.

I'm going to give this one more try before I set it aside for awhile. Can someone please help find a death certificate for Angus? I know a wee bit more than before.

Angus MacDiarmid (b.28 Mar 1853) returned from Scotland through the Port of New York on 21 Aug 1921. He either died or was interred in Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta, Georgia (transcribed as Agnes on *A* but the cemetery has confirmed it's my guy) on 5 Sep 1921  - just a few short weeks after returning from his trip.

Try as I might, I can't seem to find a death certificate for Angus on or around that 5 Sep 1921 date. I suppose he might have been sick enough on return that he didn't make it to Georgia before he died, but ......

Any help finding this death certificate would be greatly appreciated.

For the record, this means that all three brothers died in a one year period: John by train accident, Donald John by suicide, and Angus cause unknown at this point.

"Death certificates are only issued to applicants having a direct and tangible interest, primarily family members or legal representatives of the family."
