George Dodge
« on: Wednesday 23 May 12 21:26 BST (UK) »
Could I have some help please?

I have a Harriett Dodge (b) 1825 in Benenden who had a child George Oxley Dodge (b) 1841 also in Benenden. I do not know who his father was, however, I feel that George Oxley Dodge was born out of wedlock and that George Oxley may have been his father. There was a George Oxley who was born in Dallington Sussex, according to the 1841 Census. Maybe this could be him if I am correct.

Is it possible there are some bastardy files somewhere which may put my dilemma to rest.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

According to a transcription of the Baptism Register of Benenden Parish, the father of George Oxley was recorded as David Oxley.  The baptism took place on September 12 1841 with mother Harriet Dodge and BB was in the note field.

There is a baptism record for Harriet Dodge dated 11 April 1819 but I cannot find one in 1825.

There is a baptism record for a David Oxley in Rolvenden dated 27 January 1809 see Family Search.

Regards,
Tony

Many thanks Tony, so it looks like George Oxley was base born (BB) and that he took his name as George Oxley Dodge with a father David Oxley and mother Harriett Dodge.

Many thanks.

Hello Tony
I wonder if you are able to help me again please. Could you send to me by way of a personal message a copy of the following transcription detailed below. The father of of George Oxley really bugs me and I would like to see some verification of his birth.
Many thanks for your help and I am sorry to be a nuisance to you.

It is not possible to send images on the personal message system.

FindMyPast has the transcript of the baptism but you really need to see the original to clarify whether the transcription is correct.

There is a David Oxley in Rolvenden in 1841 Census.
He is a Butcher.
Christened 27 January 1809, Rolvenden, Kent to JOHN/ANNE

He married Rachel Seymour 1849.

It is sad to hear about Tony.
