John Harley b.1892 Barrhead - army records
« on: Thursday 24 May 12 01:34 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm helping out my friend with her ancestry, of whom John Harley is her g.father.

Recently I posted on the "Deciphering & Recognition help" forum an extract of John's marriage cert. asking for help in finding out his army details and his father's occupation;

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=599197.new;topicseen#new

Whilst I received some valuable help. I also got some details of his army info from Adrian;

"The camp is Fort Matilda. Quite a lot of info about it if you google.

From his Medal Index Card, Silver War Badge card and SWB roll entry, it appears John Harley enlisted on 30/4/15, trained with 3rd Bn RSF at Greenock, then was posted to 6th Bn RSF in France on 12/8/15, was wounded at some point and then discharged as no longer physically fit on 17/12/17."

For some reason I never seem  able to find WW1 army medal and service records on the TNA and wonder if SKS can help and access them for me.

I know this asking a lot but whatever I put in on their search windows always  brings up a "no records found" reply.

My friend was aware that John had an injury ( she thinks he lost a hand in a mining accident - he was a coal miner) and the above info. would appear to confirm that it was a war injury.

If anyone is able to assist this would be much appreciated.

Alan

Try "J Harley Royal Scots" at National Archives
You would really need his army number to confirm his medal card  :-\

Hello Alan,

I am researching my family history, and came upon this thread. I am John Harley's great granddaughter.

I am having a hard time finding information about him and his wife Annie - any information you have and would be willing to pass on would be greatly appreciated.

Laura

Hi Laura,

Welcome to Rootschat where I think you will find many members willing to help.

Firstly, the  John Harley and his family history is not connected with me in any way. I was doing searches for a close family friend whose grandfather happened to be  John Harley born 11-4-1892 in Barrhead, Renfrewshire.

Fortunately, I saved all  the records I obtained on my computer and have just found  them again. There  were at least 2 x John Harleys that I know of but, the one above is my friends direct ancestor. He married Annie Minery 19-7-1915 in St.Johns (RC), Barrhead, Renfrewshire.

Does the above help in any way?

Can you say who your g.father is and any info your prepared to give?

I have spoken to my friend and she would interested in making contact directly - she is not on Rootschat so I will not post her email address here for safety reasons..

Rootschat operates a  "Personal Messaging system"  (to exchange email adds. etc)  and you will need to make a total of 3 postings before you can use the "PM" system on R/Chat. Reply  to this message and another,  will allow you to use it.

Anything you can give by-way of ancestry would be most welcome and we look forward to hearing more from you soon.

Hi Alan,
Thanks so much for getting back to me.
Yes, John Harley and Annie Minnery were my great grandparents.
My grandparents were Jessie Lynch (née Harley) and Peter Lynch.
Regards
Laura

Hi Laura,

That was much quicker than I expected. Now you have posted 3 postings you can now use the PM system.

To send a PM all you have to do is click on the name to the left usually in green, this will then open up a new window
into which you can send a PM.

I will send one to you which should show up in "My Messages".

Meanwhile I will pass on the info to my friend.

Hoping to hear from you soon

Alan
