Laughton/Loughton Scotland amended to Lochton
« on: Sunday 27 May 12 15:01 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to determine where an ancestor was born, according to his death record (Townsville Qld Australia) in 1937, Robert Hunter b c1860 was from Laughton, Scotland and his parents were Robert Hunter and Janet Craig.
I have searched for a Laughton in Scotland - can't find a connection, there are a few in England but can't find a Robert Hunter with parents names that match.  From what I have found it appears he came to Townsville Australia in 1883 on the Merkara.  I think it sailed from Plymouth but am not certain.   He married Mary Bradshaw (of Manchester England) in Townsville in 1885 according to her death record her father was John Bradshaw and mother was Eliza(beth) Rice.  Again I am still trying to confirm this with english records.
I hope someone can help me with this family.

What was his occupation and his father's?

I can't see a marriage in Scotland for his parents names but it may have been pre 1855

Thank you for your reply, I just wish I knew what their respective occupations were.    Unfortunately I have no idea.   I'm guessing they were labourers of some description but doing what I really don't know.

Hi all ,

Think this is worth a look -
1881 Cottage , Eckford , Roxburgh
Robert Hunter 20 born ag. lab Laughton Berwick
Janet Hunter 42 mother ag. lab. b. Eckford Roxburgh(shown as unmarried)

Wondering if Craig was Robert's grandmother's maiden name ?

Thank you to both of you, been busy doing other things but have had a look at what you have shown me.   I'm sure you have correct person, implying that the illegitimate grandchild was an after thought happened way more often than we give credit.   It also explains why I was having trouble finding a birth record with his grandparents as his parents. again thank you.
I think I have the birth records for the grandparents Robert Hunter, born 16 July 1804 baptised 19 Aug 1804 Kelso Roxburgh .  Jane Craig b 21 June 1802 Roxburgh.
Still searching for their marriage, found some children's births not sure how many there were.     It's great to have moved a few steps further up the tree, it will be interesting to see just how far back I manage to go.
