William Breen- born Ball Alley 24oct1883
« on: Tuesday 29 May 12 14:39 BST (UK) »
William Breen-born Ball Alley Co Wcklow 24 Oct 1883. Parents James Breen and Bridget Lanigan. I understand that both James and Bridget died between 1901 and 1910 but I have not been able to find a record of their deaths. A possible connection with Roundwood is suggested. Can anyone help please?

there's quite a few possible deaths listed between those years .. do you have years of birth for James and Bridget ?

You can narrow down the search using this

Have you found your Breen family on the 1901 census ?

from a earlier thread, for reference 1911 census showing  William in Co. Armagh :

    Mc Clean/Breen/Moane household

Thank you for your help.  Yes I have picked him up in 1911 Census Armagh. I have also discovered that he emigrated to Australia in 1914 and died there in 1958. I would also appear to have found the family in the 1901 Census in Carndonagh C o Donegal. If this is them and the ages are correct James was born in 1846 and Bridget in 1849. My grandmother married a James Breen a widower in Castlewellen Co Down in1907. I think this could be my man. She had 2 children in 1908 and 1909 but by the time of the 1911 Census she is a widow.Does this info help?

here's that Donegal census returns for reference - this Breen family are lodgers in a pub on Bridge Street, Carndonagh. The age fits ok for William .. but place of birth doesn't (Dublin city vs Co. Wicklow).

  Cole household - 1901

If that's the correct family, and the marriage you have is correct, then you have quite a wide area to search i.e. Wicklow, Donegal, Down ..... but it does seem to narrow down the timeframes for the two deaths. i.e. Bridget between 1901 and 1907, and James between 1907 and 1911..

For Bridget there are only a couple of deaths on the BMD Index that come close to a match by year of birth and possible death, and just one listed with the spelling Breen.

see : Bridget Breen deaths 1901-1907, yob c1849

Rathdown district covers most of South-east Co. Dublin, and a large section of north Co. Wicklow.

There are four James Breen deaths that fit the dates - one each in Enniskillen, Shillelagh, Kenmare and Baltinglass districts.

see : James Breen deaths 1907-1911, yob c1846

all assuming that the ages on the census returns are reasonably accurate, and the person registering the death had accurate ages.

Hi there,

Just wondering where you got his mother's maiden name from ??

Below is a list of baptisms to a James Breen & Bridget Lanigan but they are in Cork - I suppose there could have been another couple with these names as they are not exactly rare

Hi Tara,

When I saw the name Breen in Ball alley. I just took it for granted the address was Ball Alley in Wicklow Town.
If you have any connections to Wicklow Town, I would love to help.
