Help dating a photo please... COMPLETED

I would be very grateful for help dating this photo..... also is it possible to tell, maybe from the clothes, whether they were working class - maybe all dolled up for the photo! This would help me to find out who they might be, which side of the family........  and, lastly, what is the thing behind the lady's hat - a cushion??

There is nothing on the back of the photo and the paper seems to be made of several layers of very fine paper, which is now splitting so that you could almost peel off the different layers.

don't know what's behind her hat - but it is unfortunate isn't it!!       At first glance I thought it was part of her hat!   

going out on a limb here to guess early part of last century - early 1900s maybe. 

One of those others will come along and say something about the size of the hat no doubt.         And the size will give away the date I bet!!

That was my first impression, too  - "Where did you get that hat, where did you get that hat???"

When people dress in their Sunday best it's often difficult to say which social class they belong to,however these garments look well cut & his fedora is a hat worn by the middle & upper classes rather than working class who wore caps whatever the occasion.1905-10 I would suggest & his narrow cut trousers suggests closer to 1910.

They are just off to a local fete and behind her hat is their entry in the marrow growing contest.

Thank you very much for your reply.

I was hoping they were working class, as I thought that it could be my grandfather with his first wife, it certainly looks like him! I will send the photo to a couple of cousins to see what they think.

He married his first wife in 1903, and his second wife in 1911, so maybe it could be a wedding photo?  He and his second wife were Quakers and married in a Meeting House.......
