Robert SCOTT hanged 1823
« on: Friday 01 June 12 13:57 BST (UK) »
Hi,

It seems I may have underestimated the use of forums for genealogy research... Yes I must be naive!  ::)

Anyways, I'm hoping to locate detailed court transcripts/minutes of the trial and sentencing for Robert Scott.
Link below for details.
http://digital.nls.uk/broadsides/broadside.cfm/id/15358/transcript/1

I've read a few different accounts written by journalists at the time and was hoping to get more details on this.

NAS has the following;
AD14/23/148 – Precognition against Robert Scott for the crime of murder at Fans farm, Earlston to Greenlaw road.
JC12/35 p.90r – Minute book for cases held in Ayr Sheriff Court.
Which I would love to get a hold of, but the cost to get copies of these is expensive when we wouldn't know exactly what we are getting.

Also, I think I came across something somewhere (vague) that there were letters written (and kept) between Robert and his wife Jessie before his death.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Justin

In relation to the letters, I did come across something a while back... a re-found it.
I'm hoping the following
Execution of Robert Scott in the Muir near Lightfield, for the murder of James Aitchison, cooper, and Robert Sim, horsedealer on ... 29th October, 1823, etc.
http://main-cat.nls.uk/vwebv/holdingsInfo?bibId=3135039
is this book
Execution of Robert Scott in the Muir Near Lightfield, for the Murder of James Aitchison, Cooper, and Robert Sim, Horse Dealer, on Wednesday Last, the 29th October, 1823, and His Body Given for Dissection; to which is Added an Account of Behaviour Since His Condemnation, and a Copy of an Affecting Letter which He Wrote to His Wife and Children on the Morning of His Execution

For some reason the google book is unavailable.

In the broadsides link provided in your first post there are several other entries regarding Robert Scott one gives details of his demeanour at the execution and the events there and the other is a letter written by Scott to his "Fellow Prisoners" - Have you read those ?

Trial http://digital.nls.uk/broadsides/broadside.cfm/id/15358

Trial 2 http://digital.nls.uk/broadsides/broadside.cfm/id/14702

Execution http://digital.nls.uk/broadsides/broadside.cfm/id/14644

Address to his fellow prisoners http://digital.nls.uk/broadsides/broadside.cfm/id/15157  (although the NLS appear to doubt that it was written by Scott himself)

For some reason the google book is unavailable.

If you look closely at the google books page for that entry it describes the "Book" as 1 page and there is also a reference to "Broadsides" which I believe tends to infer that it refers to the Broadsides previously described

Thanks for the reply Falkryn.

Unfortunately I've already read those, and a few other similar. Thank you anyway.

Google book - I used the phrase 'book' because the link from NLS refers to the format as being a book.
I understand it probably is a Broadside, what I'd like to read from that is the Letter he wrote his wife a children on the morning of his execution.

I have a relative who is heading to the NLS and/or the NAS to have a look, fingers crossed they can get access!

Have you read Norris McLeish's book "Death in the Borders" which has a 10 page account of the murder?
