Presbyterian records in Ireland
« on: Saturday 02 June 12 20:27 BST (UK) »
Hi

My Mother was I think born in Dublin as her Belfast mother was there at the time, February 1916.  The birth does not seem to have been registered but I think being Presbyterian her Mother would have had her baptized.  This could have been done in Dublin or later in Belfast.  Can anyone give any guidance as to how to go about searching please.

By 1916 there would have been very few unregistered births in Ireland. If you can't find one there are several possibilities- perhaps the birth took place somewhere other than Dublin, perhaps the child's name wasn't chosen at the time so registered as 'female', perhaps a variation of the first name was used. etc.
Unfortunately church records of baptisms as recent as 1916 are unlikely to be online so you'd need to check with the church(es) to see if such a record exists.
If you'd like to post the details of your mother (as long as she is deceased) we can have a try at looking for a birth registration.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks Aghadowey.

I have looked but would be grateful for your help.
The date I have is 3/2/1916 her name is Freda.
her mother's name is McEwan.

As you say she could have been born elsewhere etc.  Quite a puzzle.

Good question AnnClare

I would have assumed McEwan as she wasn't married.   Other possibilities are Rae, various spellings or Bull or name beginning Bull if she used the father's name.  McEwan is more probable but as I haven't found anything under that I'm beginning to wonder.  Surely the date can't be wrong.   One last possibility is Parker.  Sorry to be so vague but I'm clutching at straws.

 Thanks

I searched on all the Freda entries 1915-1916 and found this. Could Rae be Roe- there is an entry for a Freda Roe Jan - Mar 1916 Dublin South reg district vol 2 page 673

I wonder if it could be right?  Where did you find this record?
  Can I see it online?

Got to www.familysearch.org and under United Kingdom and Ireland go to the Irish civil registration indexes database.
Link

https://familysearch.org/search/records/index#count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3AFreda~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1916-1916&collection_id=1408347

This is only an index to the BMDs so to check it out you would have to get the cert - its a long shot but could  be a possibility.
