Public house, 93 Great George Street, Toxteth, Liverpool
« on: Wednesday 06 June 12 23:11 BST (UK) »
Hi,

My father's grandfather, named John Bolton 3 March 1838- pre 1911 (and his second wife and then widow, Mary Jane, aged 46 in 1911) used to run a public house at 93 Great George Street, Toxteth, Liverpool. I have traced many references to members of his family, but a number of gaps remain - notably John Bolton's and his widow's death dates.

I found a reference here by a writer here named "ainslie":
In 1909 there were two pubs in Gt George St:  The Banjo at 38 and another, unnamed at 93.  In Gt George Place there were The White Lion at 33 and another unnamed at no.1.
and I wonder if anyone can shed any light on this pub, and when it closed or was demolished etc. Perhaps if ainslie finds this he could share his source.

Many thanks to all in advance,

Tim

Hi,

This looks like his probate entry:

Bolton John of Great George Street Liverpool Licensed Victualler died 30th March, 1910 Probate Liverpool 13th April to Mary Jane Bolton widow.  Effects £360

He appears to be buried in Toxteth Park Cemetery:

Just type in the surname and then click on the grave number.

Spotted this thread by chance.  Yes, John Bolton is listed as the licensee at 93 Gt George St in the City of Liverpool  Licensing Report Book, Jan 1909.  He was a tied tenant, the pub was owned By Bents Brewery Co. and he appears to have had the pub since at least 1 Jan 1900.
(please note that I have only the 1909  edition of the book).edited to correct year.

Added:
As the Test Match has not started I have scratched around and found that in Kelly's Directory, 1968 edition, there was no pub at 93 but 91 was the Clock p.h.  I then put this into Google:
Pubs great George Street Liverpool
Scrolling down the results took me to:
The destruction of Great George Street

That site has a pic of the last days of the pub and a bit about the area which is now totally different.

Hiya...I was about 25 when The Clock was demolished if that is the pub you are talking about....The Clock was on the corner - so 91 would be the pub number and most probably a seperate door ( number 93 ) would be attatched to the pub which would be their entrance to the living quarters above the pub ...I have found this article - it was demolished in 1975 and on the next block was a very good Chinese Restaraunt....
here is a photo of the pub ...the FIRST picture and on the left hand side...
