Name change? COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 06 June 12 23:31 BST (UK) »
Looking for more help please.

I am trying to find the marriage of Patrick Dempster and Elizabeth Grieve who were the parents of Helen Dempster dob 29/1/1798, wife of Robert Hamilton dom 24/12/1825.  I have found on sp a mc for Janet Grieve and Peter Dempster FR 321 East Lothian so date could be right.  Is there any way to I can confirm as there are so many discrepancies in the old records as I have found to my cost!

Hi Sandra

Peter and Patrick are common first name variants in Scotland (and Ireland). See www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=peter

Monica  :)

PS: Doesn't explain the Elizabeth v. Janet issue for wives though  :-\

Sandra, where did you get the name of Elizabeth for Helen's mother? Just that this record fits for her birth https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTTY-L4V with mother as Janet Grieve.

More birth entries here www.rootschat.com/links/0nak/ on the LDS database.

Hi Monica and Tom,

Didn't have any time yesterday to reply.

I had a question mark against Elizabeth and the name change to Peter made me wonder but as usual you have put me right.  Do you think I will get any useful information if I use five credits to open the one credit page?

It would be good if the baptism found for Janet Grieve is the right one but is it possible to confirm this?

I would like to come to Whitekirk, Pefferside, Garvald and Dirleton and see if I can find any church records and visit cemeteries and see if I can find some more about them.  Do churches hold parish records or copies of them?

All the Church of Scotland parish registers are held centrally in Edinburgh and have been digitized and are available on Scotland's People. You would not find any paperwork if you visited the actual churches. There might be relevant gravestones in the various kirkyards, but not everyone had a stone. Someone who has researched in the area would be able to tell you if the local monumental inscriptions have been transcribed and published. That would allow you to go straight to any existing stone and mean you didn't spend ages looking for one that had never existed. A visit to the area would be interesting in that it would give you some feel for where your ancestors lived. Remember that there have been many changes since the end of the eighteenth century and it would be worth looking at the National Library of Scotland maps website to see contemporary maps and also reading the entries for the parishes in the Old Statistical Account of Scotland (which you will also find on-line) to see what they were like in the 1790s.

Hi Sandra

The info and links that Tom posted are really useful to you (and can save you the SP credits really as they are quite detailed - although always nice to have original images for direct lines where possible).

Regarding whether the possible baptism for Janet Grieve is correct, you might need to do some further searches to verify further.

With a 1798 marriage, not sure if Peter and Janet lived past the start of official registration to be able to veriry their parents' details via death certs?

The other possible checks that you can do and where Tom's links to FreeReg are really handy is to check for names of witnesses and see whether you can link them up to either the Dempster side for Peter and/or for Janet Grieve. For example, for your Helen's baptism, witnesses show as Alexander BERTRAM, Patrick GRIEVE, and John DEMPSTER.
