Ann and Hannah Pennistone birth
« on: Saturday 09 June 12 17:30 BST (UK) »
Looking for Hannah Pennistone, spelling variable, born c1814 Maiden Newton, Dorset.  Also  mother Ann Pennistone c1794 Maiden N Dorset.  Hannah married William Todd b c1794 Ashwell Rutland, and lived in Wymondham Leicestershire.  Can anyone find baptisms of Hannah or her mother.  Can't find evidence of husband for Ann.

Julie :)

The 1841 census (HO107/588/10) shows Ann Peneston, 45-49, living with Libiah (?), 15-19, Thomas, 13 and Ann, 10.

In 1851 Thomas is still living with his mother and sister and his place of birth is given as Saxby, Leicestershire.  Nearby is a John Penniston, b c 1814, Maiden Newton.

The Saxby registers have the following children born to John and Ann Penniston:
Milicent (1820), Sebar (1822), George (1824), Bathsheba (1826) and Thomas (5/4/1828).

There is a John Penniston bapt Saxby 1790 son of Thomas and Elizabeth who served in the 12th Dragoons. His military records are here:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATID=-3889312&CATLN=7&accessmethod=5&j=1
They are normally very informative and worth reading.

You can pay to read them here:
http://www.findmypast.co.uk/army-service-records-search.action?redef=M&submit=1

This may be him at Waterloo; the 12th Dragoons were there:
http://www.findmypast.co.uk/waterloo-medal-roll-1815-search-start.action?product=WMR

Ancestry says that he was a corporal in Captain G F Erskine's troop at Waterloo (part of the 12th Light Dragoons) but I don't know whether the other link has the original documents.

It appears that they had John and Hannah in Maiden Newton with Ann staying there when John was away fighting. When he retired from the army in 1819 they all moved to Saxby. At the moment there is no proof that the first two children are John's - it's possible that they took his name after their mother's marriage, but the fact that the eldest son is called John makes it seem likely that they are all his. Further evidence could be obtained by getting John (Hannah's brother)'s marriage certificate, although the father's name is not always reliable:
John Penniston m Mary Chamberlin   Sep 1839   Barrow on Soar  15 37.

Thankyou Richard, i wondered if John was Hannahs twin being born about the same date.  There are a few pennestons scattered about nearby villages.  Very interesting about Johns career in the military.

Thanks again

Hello again Richard,  there seems to be two Ann pennistons in saxby 1841 census, each with different people but same birth date.  both say born leicestershire.  can't find anthing showing both John and Ann together.  Also there is Ann born 1794  Catstock or Cattistock Dorset.  Near Maiden Newton.  All very confusing.  Wondering ig they married in Dorset which might show Anns maiden name.

Sorry to ask again, but can you find any evidence of marriage.

Thanks Julie :-\

The Ann living with Zibiah (15), Thomas (13) and Ann (10) is yours; not the one with Philip (40 not 60 as in index) and Elizabeth (10). The names match the entries on familysearch for the children of John and Ann (I think the Ann, 10, in 1841 dies in Dec 1843 so doesn't appear in 1851).

What I think you have for definite is that Ann had at least two children in Maiden Newton and then moved to Saxby where she had several more with John. At the moment there is no direct evidence for the John/Ann marriage but there is some circumstantial evidence: the eldest child is John and the first Saxby baptism is 1820, a year after John left the army, so Ann may have stayed with her family when he was abroad.

I think it is worth looking at John's army record on Findmypast. Ann may be listed as his next of kin for instance.

The other thing you can do is write to the Parish Clerk for Maiden Newton to see whether they can look up the baptismal entries:

Or you can write to the Dorset History Centre, although they will charge:

I used up some credits on Findmypast that were about to expire to look at John's original army papers. If you send me your email on a PM I will forward them to you.

They don't give a next of kin, but do suggest that he lied about his age when enlisting (he was b c 1789 not 1787) and was a tailor before he joined up for thirteen years. He did serve at Waterloo. There is nothing to show why he was in Dorset in 1813/14 although the regiment was in England then I believe.
