Gandley/Ganley
« on: Sunday 22 May 05 00:09 BST (UK) »
Looking for any information on Matthew Gandley or Ganley who was born between 1808-1812 in "Ireland".  He married a girl by the name of Mary Morris.  In 1861 they are living in Birmingham, England.  Matthew is a tailor.

If anyone could help me in narrowing down what part of Ireland, that would be wonderful.

Thanks
Karen

Hi,

There are no Gandley households in the griffiths valuation. There are some ganley. See http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm

Hi Kate,

Thanks for that link.

I have had alot of trouble with this last name.  It's rarely spelt the same.

Hi

new to the site but couldn't help notice the name gandley. my grandfather was michael gandley born 1921 in birmingham. his father was joseph gandley although theres a canadian link and talk of a name change to stanley. He married a lillian crockett and spent alot of time in wales. I know nothing of where or when he was born or who his parents or siblings were, but do know he died 1958 and is buried in east acton. Any info would be gladly recieved.

Hi Kessy!  Welcome to rootschat!

Joseph is my gr grandfather too.  My grandfather and your grandfather are half brothers, Joseph being married first to Elizabeth Ball. They came to Canada in 1906 and did change our last name to Stanley which we still use today.  I would love to talk more with you about this.

Its great to make contact!
If you post 2 more times you will be able to send a pm.

If you look at my avatar, those are Joseph Gandleys first 5 children.

it would be fantastic to chat we know very little from the gandley side of our family. Family rumours were he came from Canada and changed his name to gandley because he went AWOL from the army there. we had no idea he was from england to start with or that he had another family.

this is my 3rd post so you should be able to pm me, my mother is in for a suprise when i tell her this.

Excellent!

I have Joseph's WW1 records. He was a Staff Seargant in the Canadian Army Medical Corps. He came home to Canada after serving and was honorably discharged in 1919.

Elizabeth Ball was my great grandmother. My grandmother was your grandpa's sister Lillian Patricia Stanley. I am just starting this search and would love to know more. I also heard rumors of Joseph disappearing when my grandmother was small. No one knew what happened to him but I understand he went back to England and started a new family. I do have a letter from him to my great grandmother from 1919. Seems he was still in the army at that time. I have 6 siblings and would love to know more. My mother's maiden name is Brett. I know she had cousins and maybe a aunt in BC. Hope to hear from you.
