Hi

I have found a relative that was in the Royal Navy it states in the 1881 census that he was on board the Thunderer is there any way that I can find out where this ship was in that year.

Wow Mickey
What a fantastic site.Thought i knew all the Naval sites,I know all about my Granddads sea career thanks to Chatham Histoy society  in 2001. Although he originally joined the M.N he spent all of it employed by the R.N.
He rose from being an Officer in the M.N to a Lieutenant Commander with the R.N the only reason He was retired in 1922 was because Admiralty reduced the manpower.I do have some pictures of his ship's from the Maritime Museum not very good.I didn't have the others.I have now found them.I am now hoping to obtain Photo's to go with the document's.Still trying to find a proper photo of the Hilary 2( Booth Line) though.

P.S The Hilary 2 sank off the Shetland isles in 1917.Cecil wasn't on it

Hi Celia,

It just goes to show that there are lots of 'hidden treasures' out there on the internet.Fortunately we Rootschatters are finding more and more of them and posting them on here so that others can benefit from them too :)

I'm pleased that you enjoyed the site and if I find a photo of the Hilary 3,I'll be sure to let you know!

Best wishes,Mick ;)

Have looked at the site, another good one, i have  the complete set of the 1881 census and have spent hours and hours over the years.Looking at ships in port mainly in liverpool B/Hhead and wallasey Docks. Think i know them off my heart now. Sent the norwigian ships to a lady in Norway (The census not the ships ;D)This site will save me hours.Thank you for finding it for us.
