Any ideas on his regiment and approx date?
« on: Sunday 10 June 12 14:03 BST (UK) »
Hi

Please can anyone help out with the identification on this uniform?

I'm told it could be a picture of my GGrandfather ( The only one I have) If this is correct, he was born in 1880 Walkden Lancashire and died in 1957 name William Gaskell married to Elizabeth Shepherd in 1901

I know his son was in the "The Loyal Regiment (North Lancashire)" I don't know if son's followed into the same regiment ?

Kind Regards for any help

Judi xx

Ps I have looked for his war record but have been unable to find it ....could have been destroyed as many were.

If anyone would like to restore the photo, please feel free it would be appreciated

I have no idea which regiment this soldier was in but have some comments/questions to start things off.
No cap badge!
What is that just above HIS left jacket pocket?
Is the belt buckle regimentally identifiable?

Could be the ribbon for the Queens South Africa medal, but if he was born in 1880 and presumably this pic is taken pre ww1 then he looks older than say 34yrs.

Hi Judi

The picture was taken 1915-16. He is wearing the economy pattern WW1 tunic - no breast pocket pleats. The lack of a cap badge suggests a home defence/reserve type unit. The belt is general service pattern.

I too think he was born before 1880. Do you have details of his father or elder brothers?

Ken.

Hi all

Many thanks for all the information.
Km I know he was the eldest male in the family, brothers were
 James Henry Gaskell 1886
George Thomas Gaskell 1890
John Gaskell 1892

So not much help there ......his father was a John Gaskell born 1855

...................

I have another picture of Williams wife Elizabeth Shepherd which I will post to see if you think the two women are the same person, they have kindly been restored by some great folks on RootsChat.

See what you think?

Kind Regards Judi

Looking at him again - by his face he could be of the right age. The white moustache does makes him look at least ten years older.
