Annie Louisa Hill Born C1877 confused.com!
« on: Thursday 14 June 12 14:12 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone

I am hoping a more experienced member may be able to help me.
I am trying to locate Annie Louisa Hill born around 1877 on the 1881 census but am buggered if I can find her anywhere!
She is listed on the 1901 and 1911 census as being born in Ickleford Herts (a village just north of Hitchin)
Her marriage cert dated 1904 lists her father as being a Albert John Hill (a constable). It also lists witnesses Lilian and Margaret Hill.
I can find an Annie on 1881in Barner listed as being born in Ickleford with a mother Margaret but the father being an Albert James!
I want to find the 1881 in order to confirm her parentage as its possible she was in domestic service come 1891.
Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated.

All the best and thanks in advance

Jeff

Apologies the father listed in 1881 is Alfred James. On birth cert Alber John. Hence confused!

If everything else matches what you know about Annie I expect there may have been an enumerator or some such error on the 1881 census which gives the name as Alfred James. It's similar to Albert John ...  ;)

What was the occupation for "Alfred James" in the 1881 census? - Police Constable or similar?
Was your Annie's mother's name Margaret?
Is the Hill family you found in 1881 living where you would expect them to be?
If your answer these questions is 'Yes', then it is likely to be the correct family in 1881.

Have you tried to locate the rest of the Hill family in 1891 even if Annie was not with them? Are there other children who would still be at home?

You could also check the 1871 census - if Annie had older siblings you may be able to confirm you have the right family in 1881 by comparing with the 1871. See what the father's name is in 1871.

If both her marriage and birth certificates give her father's name as Albert John, then that is likely to be his name.  ;)

I got the impression that you had both Annie's birth and marriage certificates which both named her father as Albert John, occupation police constable? Is this correct? If you do not have the birth certificate you should purchase it - references supplied by Nanny Jan. This would solve the issue of both parent's names.
