COMPLETED- Skeogh School near Dromore
« on: Sunday 22 May 05 11:53 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Can anyone help me with an address of Skeogh School, which is/was close to Dromore. My Great grandfather went there, his name is William John Cardwell and he was born around 1860, and lived in the townland of Drumiller.I know there is a townland close by called Skeagh.I have been unable to find any details of him elsewhere, and I am thinking he may have went to Drumlough Presbyterian Church. Unfortunately someone has taken the microfilm of this Church's  records from PRONI, and I am unable to make progress. Any help greatly appreciated.

OTTO,

I suggest you drop a note to -

Dromore Library,
The Town Hall,
The Square,
Dromore,
Co. Down
BT25 1AW.

Librarians are generally very helpful in providing local information.

Just a note to say I have found Skeogh School, which was built in 1823, and it is being very well cared for, in that it seems to be a listed building and is now a beautiful country cottage.

Otto,

Have you tried the Presbyterian Historical Society, Church House, Belfast - they have the same microfilms as PRONI & are very helpful (only 1 m/film reader).

Thanks Eddie,
PRONI allowed me to view their master copy before they get a copy of it made.Unfortunately no progress made, as my Cardwell ancestor appears to have belonged to the Plymouth Brethren.

Just for interest - I went to Skeagh / Skeogh School from 1960 until 1967. It closed the following year.
At that time the address was Skeagh School, Skeagh, Dromore.   Today it's School Road, Dromore.  I live in Tullindoney - next townland between Skeagh and Drummiller.  When I went there the Headmaster was Mr Walsh from current day Edentrillick Road, Hillsborough.
