Anne, Hope the following will help narrow it down for you and I haven't stuck a 'shire' in the wrong place (my apologies if I have!):
Kilspindie, Perthshire
Fordoun, Kincardineshire
St. Cyrus, Kincardineshire
Rafford, Morayshire

Anne, As far as locations in Scotland are concerned, this might be a case of 'the blind leading the blind', but here is what I could find out about your query.  I'm posting it with the hopes that those in the know will make any corrections!

"The City of Dundee borders onto Perth and Kinross and Angus.

Angus, borders Kincardineshire to the north-east, Aberdeenshire to the north, Perthshire to the west.  Southwards, it faces Fife across the Firth of Tay."

Here's my tu'pence worth...

Kilspindie, Perthshire - 15m half way between Perth & Dundee

Fordoun, Kincardineshire - I thought it was Aberdeenshire 10m south of Stonehaven so about 60 m from Dundee

St. Cyrus, Kincardineshire - just north of Montrose 40/50m

Rafford, Morayshire - near Forres miles and miles...

I've given rough distances to Dundee but you can get better ones from http://www.theaa.co.uk routefinder.  Kilspindie is the closest.

Cheers,
Pam

Thanks to Pam for putting us right on Fordoun!
"Fordoun (Fothirdun)
Aberdeenshire
A location in the Howe of the Mearns, Aberdeenshire, Fordoun lies to the west of the A 94 road from Dundee to Aberdeen, 3 miles (5 km) north of Laurencekirk. Fordoun or Fothirdun lies in a parish of the same name, its kirkton being the village of Auchenblae. It is associated with the 14th-century chronicler, John of Fordun."

Hi Debra,

"Troon" the land of golf!  It is in Ayrshire and recently hosted the Open.

This is the link to the FHS...

And here's a map...

Good luck with your research.
