Just managed a quick look at the death indexes today, I'll try the St Helier burial records next time.

Arthur died between May 1935 and May 1937 while Mary Jane didn't last much longer, her demise was between May 1937 and May 1939.

jerseylilly,

You are so thoughtful to look up the death indexes.  I love the rootschat forums.  It is wonderful that there are people like you willing to volunteer their time.  I appreciate what you have done for me.

Since coming on this forum, I have looked up Jersey.  It is a beautiful part of the world.  I live in Canada and it is great to learn a little bit of the spots where our ancestors lived.

Thanks,

One of Jersey's more colourful characters was Lillie or Lily Langtry the actress who was born in Jersey. Sometimes known as Jersey Lily.

I heard of her.  Wasn't she a mistress of Edward VII for awhile?

Lily was the mistress of several influential men, including Edward, Prince of Wales. Her father, William Corbett Le Breton was Rector of St Saviour's parish and later Dean of Jersey. The Old Rectory, where they used to live, is just across the field from my house.

Back to the Janaways - both buried in Mont a l'Abbe cemetery, St Helier

Arthur Henry Janaway died 11th February, 1936, aged 75, buried 13th February. Minister Rev Gregory, Croads Funeral Directors

Mary Ann Matters, widow of Arthur Henry Janaway died 21st April, 1938, buried 22nd April, 1938.

jerseylilly,

You have filled in the missing information for Arthur and Mary Ann.

I thank very much for the time you took, to find the dates and details for me.

I appreciate the added story of Lily.  It gives a little more interesting history of Jersey.

barryd,

Thanks for the info about birth & bapt for Channel Islands.

That will be good for other people reading this line.

In Arthur Henry's case,  he and his wife didn't have children, (they married in 1904 and were 50 & 52 yrs by 1911 census) and they were born in Southampton, Hampshire and St. Stephen by Saltash, Cornwall.

I'd stick with the Jersey Archive site, where the St Helier baptisms have been on-line for several years, or Jerripedia (same baptisms copied from the Archive site) - I've just tried half a dozen or so births that I looked up last week and FamilySearch didn't find one of them
