Livenou/Livno and Essive, where?
« on: Friday 06 July 12 19:24 BST (UK) »
A marriage in Amsterdam, 1657, two Jewish people

The groom from Livenou/Livno.

This family is supposed to originate from Rinteln (Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany), which is reflected by their surname in jewish records: Rintel. This groom is the first in a long line that lived in Amsterdam.
I know there's Livno in Bosnia, but that seems very odd. Any other suggestions?

The bride from Essive
Any idea what/where that could be?

This may not be exact but when June Brown did 'Who do you think I am', her Jewish ancestry went back to various places - I think one was Livorno.
Just checked - here is a link http://www.whodoyouthinkyouaremagazine.com/episode/june-brown

Livorno is as far from Rinteln as Livno in Bosnia is.
In both cases, it were mostly Sephardic jews there at the time.

But true, Livorno was an important trading centre, and some jews from the north could have tried their luck there.

I was just thinking that her family travelled that distance and more :-\ and the records were fantastic.

Was there a Jewish community in Livno?

I haven't found it specifically in Livno, but definitely in Bosnia.
Most of them Sephardim, expelled from Spain and found refuge in the Ottoman empire. Most Ashkenazi came after 1828.

But of course there could have been some exceptions.

PS just found this about Sarajewo
"In the 17th century, Jews of Ashkenazi descent began arriving in Sarajevo, fleeing persecution from Europe.  The Jews already established in the city were of Sephardic descent, and the two communities remained separate until the advent of World War II.  "

So Bosnia is not as unlikely as i thought.

But Essive ?????????

My Grandparents came from Livno and they said that there are a strong number of muslims in the villages.
