Baptisms
« on: Saturday 07 July 12 05:44 BST (UK) »
I am seeking some help regarding officiating ministers at a church in Cheshire.

In 1836, 8 Sept, my GGrand father was baptised at Holy Trinity, Chester.

See http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,570980.msg4232765.html#msg4232765

for some of the information. The query this time is, was it frequent for a baptism to be carried out in the middle of the week for a different minister to officiate?

The first two baptisms were carried out by William Hutchinson, Curate, both on Sundays
The next one was by W S Perrot, officiating minister (I think), a Wednesday
The fourth (the one I am interested in) by T Easton, officiating minister, Thursday
The other four on the page were all by William Hutchinson, Curate. The first two of these were Sundays, the other two were the same Monday.

Any help would be gratefully accepted.

I am a little puzzled here..
http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb/
database
baptism
chesters ...........1838 baptism of george is not there
but
on the Glossary link
http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb/Live/v3.6/gindex.html
CEHT ...which is Chester Holy Trinity  -  is listed ....so I would have thought the baptism was there... I can only think  some years for Holy Trinity have not yet been listed ... it would take a long time , but maybe if you could find baptisms at Holy Trinity 1838 for other surnames in your tree , maybe you could trawl through the listed Ministers names ...
only a thought

SORRY...I checked 1838 ...let me check 1836

The Book of Common Prayer stated:
The Curates of every Parish shall often admonish the people, that they defer not the Baptism of their Children longer than the first or second Sunday next after their birth, or the other Holy-day falling between, unless upon a great and reasonable cause, to be approved by the Curate.

Thank you both for your help.

The Cheshire Bishops Transcripts on Family Search have:
George Chesters baptised 8 Sep 1836 at Holy Trinity
George Chestors baptised 8 Sep 1836 at St Mary’s on the Hill

The Cheshire Parish Registers have:
George Chesters baptised 8 Sep 1836 at Holy Trinity

I also have an image of the baptism register for Holy Trinity, with the baptism registered at No 1092 on Page 137, which is where I got the ministers names from.

In all cases, the parents are listed as Edward Chesters, and Anne.

FreeBDM does not have George listed in Cheshire, or Lancashire.

From trawling the internet, it seems that 8 Sept is a Holy Day, Birth of Blessed Virgin Mary.

It is a little confusing

Does the image actually have the name of the Church on it or are you going by the index on FindMyPast?
If you are going by the index then I believe that FindMyPast actually use the FamilySearch index so if FamilySearch has made a mistake (and they do seem to make a lot) then that error is also on FindMyPast.

As garstonite says on an earlier post http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb/ has the baptism as Chester St Mary, This is a local project and Holy Trinity hasn't been processed yet.

I'm more inclined to believe that the baptism was at St Mary but the only way to know for certain is to check the Parish Registers themselves

Andy, the image I have does have the name of the church at the top of the page.

It has: Parish of the Holy Trinity in the County of the City of Chester.

It is on page 137, No 1092
