At www.durhamrecordsonline.com there are baptisms for:

Thomas Proctor of Greatham in 1842
Elizabeth Jane Ross of Greatham in 1846

...and a marriage for Elizabeth Jane Ross of Greatham in 1864.

Search at www.durhamrecordsonline.com/newsearch.php using Hartlepool district.

You'll need to register and pay (a little) for detailed transcriptions - see http://www.durhamrecordsonline.com/AboutPurchase.php.

Thomas Proctor Baptised 10th Feb 1842 at St John Baptist Greatham   parents  Francis Proctor (a single woman)

Elizabeth Jane Ross  Baptised 29 Sept 1846  parents William Ross (blacksmith) and Margaret

on their marriage Thomas has put his father as John Proctor(Tile Maker)  - but as the above shows that isn't true ... however it appears Francis "married" a John Horner so maybe he just used his mums new mans first name and just added his surname for respectability ?

So, going back to that 1861 census, it looks as though Thomas Procter was an apprentice in the same household as Elizabeth's father (William) and grandfather (John). Perhaps that is how Thomas and Elizabeth met?

well it does uncomplicate things

Mrs Harrison is the sister of Elizabeth Ross's mother Margaret Davies (Davis) - original question about the uncle being a Harrison
Thomas Proctor was an apprentice for Elizabeth's Grandfather - so prob how they met
Thomas was illegitimate so the grandmother Proctor is on maternal side
and I can't remember the details (wish you could flick back without coming off messages) but there was an Adamson? to Ross marriage which explains why she was a niece in that household too.

:)

so

Elizabeth Ross - parents William Ross (1818) and Margaret Davis  (c1824) - paternal grandparents John Ross (c1794) and Elizabeth Metcalf (c1791) (according the Ancestry trees)

Thomas Proctor - mother Francis Proctor father unknown - maternal grandparents Richard Proctor (c1770) and Elizabeth Alderson (c1785) (according to ancestry trees)

also according to ancestry Elizabeth and Thomas went on to have 12 children !

HO107 piece 2384 folio 83 page 18
The 1851 isn't any help as Thomas is with his gmother
Elizabeth Procter 66 ag lab Derlngton? Durham
Thomas Procter 9 gsonscholar Greatham
Robert Procter 25 son shoemaker Greatham
Fanny Procter 33 dau ag lab Billingham Durham
John Horner 33 ag lab lodger Rippon Yorkshire

So this seems to be Thomas with his widowed grandmother but also with mother Frances (Fanny) in the household as well as her future husband John Horner, whom she married the following year:

Marriage, Jun qtr 1852

John HORNER
Frances PROCTOR

on the same page, Stockton 10a 127.

Elizabeth Proctor is still going strong in 71 census Easington aged 89 - mother in law of John Horner (aged 50) but Johns wife is now a 21 year old Dorothy Cook Horner ... so the death of Frances Horner 1865 Easington is prob Thomas's mum
