Chatham soldier 1841
« on: Thursday 12 July 12 11:01 BST (UK) »
hello
I have a soldier in 1841 patient at the  North Hospital, Chatham, Medway, Kent . Can anyone help with where he would likely have served at that time. Home or abroad ? Were there any conflicts in France ? His wife states she was born France so just wondering  :)

With thanks
Sue

Hi Sue

There was a second hospital in the area - the Melville. This contains Royal Marines and Royal Navy, so 'soldier' in the North Hospital probably does mean army. Chatham was the home to a number of army battalions guarding this important port. A large number of regiments serving in India also left a depot in Chatham. Also most convict sailings started in Chatham and detachments of soldiers being sent to their regiment in Australia/NZ were used as guards. Or he may have been a guard on the many hulks in the Medway area. So trying to track down which regiment he served with will be an extended task.

If you post his name, date and place of birth we can look for his service record and any entry in the medals rolls. His record will only have been kept if he served long enough to receive a pension. Have you found him described as a 'pensioner' anywhere?

Was his wife British? There was an army of occupation in France from 1815 to c1819 following Waterloo. So she may have been the daughter of a soldier.

Ken

Thank you. Its possibly him. :)  He is not a soldier in 1851 and Discharge would be around 1844 ? Seeing has he was in hospital 1841 would that be mentioned on his medical record ??

well i,ve never come across one where the soldier is hospitalised on discharge so can,t rightly answer that question , what i did think of as this thomas was in canada it,s possible he met and married his wife there even though she says born france doesn,t mean he met or married her there or england only bear in mind an nearly half of canadians are french or french extraction .
