Col(e)man Family Duxford/Thriplow
« on: Thursday 12 July 12 18:54 BST (UK) »
I have a Rebecca Colman marrying Samuel Butler in 1828 in Swaffham Bulbeck.  They had George Colman (1829) , Mary Anne )1832), Ashwell Frost (1835) and Jeremiah (1836) all Swaffham Bulbeck.  Samuel died in 1836.  On the 1841 census Rebecca and the children are with her BIL John Butler, in 1851 Rebecca and Jeremiah are with married son George, 1861 she is a servant.  On all of the census she gives her place of birth as Duxford, and the ages put a date of birth around 1797-1799.  She was buried in Swaffham Bulbeck on 16 AUG 1871 aged 73.  I don't have her on a census in 1871 though.

What I struggle with is her birth and her parents/siblings.  Although there are both Colman's and Coleman's in Duxford (and a birth of a Rebecca in 1803), I don't think this is her.  There are also Coleman's 2 miles down the road in Thriplow, and there is a Rebecca born there to John and Rebecca Brazier chr 3 March 1799.  The marriage was on 3 APR 1796 in Thriplow, although there is a conflicting entry on the IGI for Whittleford in 1796, no date given.  Rebecca Brazier was chr in Whittlesford 2 OCT 1768 to John & Ann Brazier.  Given that Whittlesford is 2 miles from Duxford and Thriplow is 2 miles from Duxford I know we're dealing with the same area so hopefully the same family!

As far as I can ascertain, Rebecca Coleman is the only child chr to John & Rebecca Coleman that I can find in Thriplow, Duxford or Whittlesford area.  There is a death record for a Rebecca Coleman aged 44 (1770) in Thriplow in 1814 which I think is the wife of John Coleman.  I can't find a birth for John Coleman, but there are Colemans in Thriplow up to 1737, then a big gap until the birth of Rebecca in 1799.

I'd really like to prove one way or the other if this Rebecca bn in 1799 is mine, and if she has any siblings and any info on her parents too.  Does anyone have the PR's for Thriplow or any other sources of possible research for this Coleman family?

Thanks,
Brenda

I don't have her on a census in 1871 though

1871 shows her birthyear as 1812 and she is mother in law to Ebenezer & Amy Smith   RG10 Piece 1598 Folio 79 Page 14

Hi Carole
I'm not sure if that 1871 entry is her as the age and place birth are way off.  I searched for a marriage of Ebenezer Smith and an Amy and she does come up as Amy Butler..... but I don't have any Amy Butlers on my tree!

The Swaffham Bulbeck PR cd is at home, I'll have a look tonight as I can't recall the witness names of the top of my head.

She is the only Rebecca Butler living in Swaffham Bulbeck in 1871 but if you check Amy back to 1841 - father was William - not Samuel - so it is the wrong 1871 entry

Does Amy list Swaffham Bulbeck as her birth place?  I can look her up in the PR's and see who she might be.  I have a William Butler born in 1818 in Horningsea who could be her father, but do think he died as a toddler (listed in the PR's).  The Butlers were originally from Horningsea but migrated over to Swaffham Bulbeck as adults.

Thanks for taking the time to look.

Yes she does - 1829 Swaffham Bulbeck

Father William was aged 30 in 1841 and Rebecca was 25

1841 census has William Butler with wife Rebecca (aged 25) and their children including Amy.  So the Rebecca Carole found in 1871 isn't the Rebecca born in Duxford/Thrplow in 1797ish.

I need to look at the PR's for Swaffham Bulbeck again to make sure that the Rebecca Butler who dies in 1871 is mine and not this one, there might be two and I've overlooked one.
