Artist Family Thomas HODGETTS London & Edinburgh
« on: Friday 13 July 12 05:06 BST (UK) »
Hope this in the correct forum.
Thomas & Harriet (Hardy) HODGETTS
Although I am descended from Thomas (the convict) & Harriet Hodgetts in Australia but because of my artist background I am very interested in Thomas Hodgetts the artist/engraver who lived and worked in London then Edinburgh and had children who followed artistic and creative careers.
Thomas Hodgetts was a Paddington London-based painter and mezzotint engraver. He specialised in religious subjects, portraits and landscapes. Hodgetts exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy between 1801 and 1824.
Thomas was in Edinburgh in the late 1820’s, early 1830’s living at Canon Mills, no 19 Comely Bank.
His son Robert Moore Hodgetts also was operating as an artist in Edinburgh in the late 1830’s but he is found in Gateshead Durham in the 1861 census.
Another son Thomas Carderay  Hodgetts  was living in Stoke Upon Trent in 1871 and Llandudno, Carnarvon in 1881 listed as a artist painter. He is at Penrhyn Eglwys Rhos Caernarvonshire in 1901 aged 78.
His son Joseph Edwin carried on a business as a watchmaker in Wales.
I have not found where Thomas died or in fact where his family ended up. Has anyone come across this family in their research?
A brief family tree:
Thomas & Harriet Hardy married 1803 Paddington.
Chn: Edwin Dance, Robert Moore (1808), Emma (1808), Harriet (1815), Mary Amelia (1818), Thomas Carderay (1823)
Thomas Hodgetts (convict). Thomas Hargrave and Annie (nee Sheehan) YATES London. Robert & Sarah (nee Morgan) LOCKE.

Welcome to rootschat Richard.  :)

Can I just confirm that the artist Thomas Hodgetts is not your direct line, but you are simply interested in finding out more about the family?

Apart from the brief details of the family you mentioned, do you have any more information about this family such as births and marriages, and have you found them in any censuses? (I am attempting to discover how much you already know about the family to avoid any duplication.)

[Do you suspect that there may be a connection between your Thomas Hodgetts and the artist Thomas Hodgetts?]

Hi Ruskie,
I believe all Hodgetts are related probably from a common Norman ancestor. I do not know of any direct connection to this Thomas Hodgetts but am interested because of the fantastic art background of the whole family. I have never found other people researching them and as a  humble artist I am intrigued.
All I have so far is below but life histories interest me more.
By the way, I believe my convict Thomas Hodgetts was innocent but as it turns out transportation was a god send to the English poor.

Hi, Do you know about the amazing art connection that YOUR Thomas has through his descendents to one of Australia's greatest artists? I find it interesting that the other Thomas, the one you're asking about, married a Hardy, because that family line enters into your Thomas's line as well. Let me know if you're still monitoring this thread and I'll tell you more. Alan

Thanks for the msg, I tried replying via the msg system, but the site won't let me. Anyway, so Thomas (yours, not the other artist) begat Mary Maria who married Thomas Graham. Amongst their children was Mary Ann Graham who married Thomas Anderson and begat Louisa Rosena Anderson (among others) who married George Robt. Hardy (I told you your family also had a Hardy connection), and those two brought Jane Charlotte Ann Hardy and siblings into the world. Now Jane married Sydney Benfield, and they had a bunch of tykes, two of which were Clara Jean and Arthur Sydney. This is where the artists come in.

First, Clara Jean...she married into a locally famous family of artists. Australia's premiere stained glass artist was for many, many years a man named John Radecki, and Clara Jean married his son Leo, who was a highly accomplished and respected stained glass artist in his own right. Leo and Clara begat Frank Radecki, who became a college professor teaching graphic arts, and he begat me and I'm an internationally published photographer (which means that you and I are very distant cousins).

And then there's Arthur Sydney Benfield (who went by the nickname "Spag"). Spag was a brilliant artist himself, who studied under the tutilage of John Radecki, until he became proficient enough that he struck out on his own and opened his own studio. By some accounts, after "Old John" died at 90 (he never did retire), Spag then took on the mantle of Australia's greatest stained glass artist (Leo probably would contest that, but that's an ancient battle...). I have a copy of a letter from Spag that details the stained glass art world, and if I could get the system to let me msg you directly, I'd be happy to send you a copy. Alan
