William Henry Newson Yealmpton
« on: Saturday 14 July 12 19:10 BST (UK) »
Hello,
can anybody please help.  I'm trying to find out about my gg grandfathers parents.
His name is William henry Newson and he was a merchant seaman born 02/08/1835 to Robert Newson and Elizabeth in Yealmpton Devon.
i can't find any details of a marriage for them or anything in the 1841 census.
Theres possibly a record of a marriage for Robert Newson in Devon 1834 on GenesReunited but im signed up to ancestry.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
                Thank you, kevan

A Robert NEWSON married an Elizabeth WYNHALL at East Stonehouse Church (St George) on 11 Feb 1834. Elizabeth was also baptised at Yealmpton 23 Jul 1813, dau of John & Mary - John was a carpenter and their abode was Brixton Turnpike Gate.

Hello,
Thanks for this information, where did you find it, was it the entry in Genes Reunited? This subject has been driving me nuts so i really appreciate you taking the time to look it up for me. I wonder why they married in East Stonehouse.
                 Thanks again, Kevan.

Information from parish registers. East Stonehouse is a parish within the Plymouth area - see http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/EastStonehouse/index.html
The name NEWSON is not a common Devonshire name - mainly Suffolk - perhaps Robert was a mariner?

Thanks,
William was also married in the exact same church even though he is listed as being from Yealmpton which isn't anywher near East Stonehouse.
Robert is shown as a carpenter on their wedding  certificate.
i just need to pin down a death or age to get Roberts birth year.
Really helpful information, thanks a lot.

Well it's only 8 miles from Yealmpton to East Stonehouse, so not too far for the wedding. I tried to find burials - no luck, even using variant spellings for NEWSON.

yes,
i suppose it's not that far but it seems odd because there's a big old church in either Yealmpton or Brixton. The family name does morph a bit over time with Newson, Newsom and Newsome all making appearances over the years.
I decided to make a tree going back to all my ggg grandparents and Roberts birth and death dates are the only things missing, most annoying, he just seems to disappear.
                  Thanks for looking though, Kevan.

Did some more digging:
When William Henry was baptised in 1835, Robert's occupation was given as labourer.
A Robert NEWSON was buried at Newton Ferrers aged 9 months 5 Jun 1822 - this child was probably the son of John & Elizabeth NEWSON. The name then evolved into NEWSAM at Newton Ferrers.
John NEWSON was buried 7 Nov 1847 aged 66 - so born 1781. His wife Elizabeth was buried 1 Dec 1848 aged 60, so born ca 1788.
John NEWSON married Elizabeth HILL at Bigbury in 1819 - a baptism for an ELizabeth HILL was recorded there in 1786 - so it looks as though they went to the bride's home parish. Could this John NEWSON be a brother of your Robert?
I then checked for other NEWSON marriages at East Stonehouse - a William NEWSON married there in 1828 and 1836. (He was born in Plympton per census) An Elizabeth NEWSEN married there in 1818. There was definitely a connection/attraction with the Church.

Very intriguing,
I'd come across the Newson family in Newton Ferrers and guessed there was a connection but couldn't tie it to Robert, maybe John is Roberts brother, i might collate what i've got on Robert and see what i can turn up at the WDRO.
                   Happy Hunting, Kevan.
