Parnell Brothers to Natal 1896
« on: Thursday 19 July 12 14:13 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am after advice on how to find a record of the Parnell brothers landing at Port Natal in 1896.

They were Henry, b1866 Liverpool, and Herbert, b1873 Nottingham.  They previously migrated to Victoria Australia and in 1890 Henry married and had two children, one in 1890 and the other 1893. They sailed from Melbourne in July 1896 on the FRAM for Port Natal and I would like to find out more about them, particularly Henry.  Herbert must have returned to Australia, although I have found no record yet, as he married here in 1898.

Thank you

Hi there, I have checked the online indexes I have access to without success. I will need to check other databases when I get back home. I am currently also in Melbourne pursuing my ancestor. Will get bAck to you in A week or so. Ruth

Hi
I have recently revisited the problem of Henry Parnell and his fate.  Last time I hit the big brick wall but I have found a tad more information. I found some newspaper articles about the ship FRAM on which the brother's travelled, one in particular was a letter sent back to OZ by a passenger on the ship in which he states that almost all the men on board travelled on to Johannesburg for work.  The Parnell's were Bricklayer/Builders so that makes sense.
Henry's wife Eliza re-married in Dec 1899 and on the certificate she states she is a widow whose husband died in 1898.  Now I'm thinking that could have been late 1897 as brother Herbert was back in Melbourne to get married in Jan 1898.  Unless the brother's seperated that is - so many variables thats why we do this ancestor chasing I guess, the thrill of the chase!!
Hoping someone may be able to help please.
Cheers
Bob

Thanks for the information.  I am however a little concerned with the name, nowhere in all the records and references I have relating to Henry Parnell is the given name William used.  I will however do as you suggest and contact eggsa, although I suspect it is not him.
Cheers
