Hi Anita

The place to search for BMDs is the official pay to view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/  The year of your grandmother's birth (1916) is outside the current cutoff where you can view it online (this is currently 1911 due to the 100yrs privacy rule). Her cert would need to be ordered and you can do this online via SP.

Scottish birth certs include good information, including parents' marriage date (if parents were married).

Hi Anita ,

As Monica says best to order that birth certificate

Do you know if your Grandmother's parents remained in West Lothian ?

The 1911 Census has a Francis Carty age 30 at Fauldhouse West Lothian
Also Elizabeth Carty age 29

There is a marriage Francis Carty / Elizabeth McGeachie 1902 Lanark

Also a death Francis Carty 1943 West Lothian , born c1880
A death Elizabeth Carty(other surname McKECHIE) Bathgate West Lothian 1971 , born c1880

Would any of the above mean anything to you ?

Lots of possible leads there Ev, well done  :)

If Francis was born in Scotland, from possible death age you may have found, this might be him with family in 1901:

Francis Carty 42, General Labourer b. Ireland
Margaret Carty 52 b. Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire
Francis Carty 21 coal miner b. Shotts, Lanarkshire
Michael Carty 18 coal miner b. Shotts, Lanarkshire
Joseph Carty 15 coal miner b. Shotts, Lanarkshire
Catherine Carty 13 b. Shotts, Lanarkshire

Address: Tory Row, Cambusnethan Lanarkshire

This Carty family in 1881:

Francis Carty 49 (age seems up and down on the transcriptions) coal miner b. Ireland
Margaret Carty 32
John Carty 12
James Carty 10
Margaret Carty 8
Bernard Carty 6
Mary Carty 3
Francis Carty 1
...plus 2 lodgers

Address: Flat Row, Cambusnethan

From some online trees, mother Margaret's maiden name is given as McCaffery.

Dates for parents from these famly trees:

Francis 1832-1918
Margaret 1849-1917

You certainly should find the transcripts for Scotland on Ancestry between 1841-1901. The only one they don't have is the newly released 1911 census which only Scotlands People give you access to on a pay to view basis.

With your Ancestry subs, you should be able to view the family trees showing for Francis and Margaret (McCaffery), a few show there. Their marriage details I think are here https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTYQ-YYV - again, SP will give you the original image.
