Matthews: stream near Herberton Lane
« on: Saturday 21 July 12 17:21 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me please?

1921 Death Cert for my GGF gives the date and place of death as:

"First or Second January 1921 in stream near Herberton Lane"

Did this stream have a name. Does it still exist?

Also, cause of death is given as "asphyxia due to immersion".  Is that how 'drowning' was described back then/or foul play?

An Inquiry was held by a Military Court of Inquiry on 4 Jan 1921

Here's hoping someone can help me.

Thank you

Is this the Herberton lane in Kilmainham ?

I can see this listed on the 1911 census but haven't found it on a map yet...

I'm sure exactly what the 'asphyxia due to immersion' notation refers to, but maybe it refers in this case to "dry drowning", where little or no water is found in the lungs..

Thank you for your reply, Shane

The address given on the Death Cert is S.C.Rd, Rialto.  I thought maybe Herberton Lane was in Rialto.  I know there is an area of Rialto with 'Herberton' in the address, but no Herberton Lane.

(I didn't know of one in Kilmainham.)

I think Herberton Lane was what is now Herberton Road in Rialto.  See the OSI 25 inch map at the link below.

there's also a Herberton house just north of this...

I've located a listing in Thom's 1914 for a Mrs. Lamb on the section of the SCR between Dolphin's-barn and Rialto-bridge, and the address for her is shown as 'Herberton Lane' - I dont see it on the OSI map though..

You mention that there was a Military Court of Enquiry - can you give us your ggf's name as something might turn up once we could search with the name?

Herberton Road - Herberton Lane, as was - runs North from the junction of Crumlin Road and Sundrive Road.  It crosses the canal at Herberton Bridge and joins the South Circular Road at a roundabout  a little south of Rialto Bridge.  In the OSI 25 inch map, the dashed line (indicating a townland boundary, I think) runs along Hereberton Lane.

Just posted a reply and it vanished!  First time on Rootschat!

Thanks for the map link Dermo - couldn't find any evidence of a stream.  I did notice the spelling of Harberton Br

Thanks Breenbryne, details:

John Turner Matthews b 1855 Norfolk   John Turner are his first names.

The family moved to Ireland 1884 - 1886.  They are on the 1901 and 1911 Census in Dublin.

I have just been searching the map and found Elm Terrace which is their address before it was changed to S.C.Rd.  That is just fantastic!

Also saw Canal View Terrace.  One of the daughters lived there after she married.
