Hi Freckneale & Trish,

Just as a quick update, I did got to the archive on Sat, and have come away with more info, so am wading my way through it as we speak.

I will be back to you in the near future, in the mean time I need to send for 2 more wills, but hopefully that may well confirm names etc?!

Thanks again,

Hi Chaps,

Just to let you know,I have now sent for the located wills.... and now (frustratedly) waiting.

On the Mary Ann Clay (Clayton) marriage to John Smith, I think you might well have something Freckneale.... I did check the original record, and it does look like"Clayton"  but from something I have also read in a brief summary of a will, I am very hopeful that your theory is right....we'll see!

Again, I will update as soon as I am able.

Best wishes,

Hello Trish and Freckneale,

Finally today I have received the final of the two much awaited wills.

I am now convinced  the marriage for John Smith = Mary Ann Clay(ton) is the right one, for the right people. ( I shall put the "ton" error down to a deaf vicar!)

The will for John Smith has the executors listed as  his sons - Sidney, Edward & John- wife Mary Ann.  Not a lot else but it is at least good confirmation of names.

Robert Clay's will is much more useful -it offers all his daughters names, and who they marry, and one of the executors is John Smith, husband of Mary Ann.

So thank you both for your help - it has been  much appreciated!

Best wishes,

Hello Chaps,

Thanks for sharing in my excitement!

....funny you should say about "smashing a Smith brick wall" Freckneale....

Anyone up for trying to find out where this elusive chap was born??

Any ideas?

Kind regards,

Well largely thanks to Trish you got back a generation or two on Mary's side. :D

And now you want to trace John back?! :-X The trouble is the 1841 census which says he was not born in Notts - making it really difficult to know where to start.

You've probably tried this strategy, but who were the witnesses at John's marriage to Mary? There is a chance - however small - that one of them could be John's relative. Also, did they marry by Banns or Licence? If they married by Licence, record of the bond or allegation may provide details as to John's background.

Hi Alexander,

Thank you for your thoughts and continued interest!

John and Mary were married by banns, one of the witnesses was a church man - he features on a lot of the records.

The other I  can't make out - (I will now post that on the deciphering & recognition board - in the hope that it be made sense of by someone!)

I know it's a long shot, but I do hate to be beaten!!

I am still wading through various other wills, that are connected with the family, just pulling out new names and following them in the hope they might give me some other clues too.

Thanks again,
