Looking for location
« on: Wednesday 25 July 12 21:53 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know where CALFEHAY in Dorset is? I assume its a village near Dorchester but I can't find it. Two of my aunts were born there and registered in Dorchester. Vera (1929) and Molly (1931) Evans. Any advice welcome.

Could it be Calfhay/Calf Hay Farm: http://www.yell.com/b/S.J+and+A.D+Awdry-Farmers-Sherborne-DT96JB-5603995/

If you look at the postcode it's down Calf Hay Lane near Dorchester.

Also, Google Calfhay and there are lots of results.

Calfhay Farm was suggested in your previous thread Chris

Have you reason now to doubt this ???

I haven't done much on the tree recently and had forgotten previous stuff on here. My mum mentioned Vera and said she had been talking to her about the past and Vera said about Pafe but my mum said she was born at Calfehay which was a bit different to what I had previously so I thought I would mention it on here. Chances are that it was a farm as my grandfather worked on farms most of his life. I googled Calfehay farm but nothing relevant came up so I don't know what you found.

It is privately owned but open to the public: http://visitwoods.org.uk/en/visit-woods/Pages/large-wood-map.aspx?wood=19921&site=Calfhay-Farm#.UBEbabRfF8E so you could go and have a walk round and take some photos - try and find where your Mum was born.

Thanks for that. As my grandfather was an ag. lab mostly, he moved the family around quite a lot. They went to Calfhay from Llanelli and then onto Pailton near Rugby where my mum was born 1937. By 1941 he was in Nuneaton. Must have been quite a feat as when my grandparents married in Llanelli (1928) they already had 8 children between them to other partners and they went on to have another 9 together (that lived) I have had quite a task finding all these places as they were mostly small hamlets. I have now seen the farm on google maps and a cottage nearby which they may have lived in when the 2 girls were born in 1929/31. With the name Evans as well, it has been challenging but enjoyable.

We can see from that return that in 1871, the farm was 275 acres but there were 4 labourers + the main farmer involved in the land.

I wonder how large the farm is now? Perhaps you should write to the people at the farm?

Oh, and have a look on here: http://www.jlb2011.co.uk/wales/listfram.htm , to see if there any other Welsh Evans researchers.
